Back up spinners worry Fletcher

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Coach Duncan Fletcher says spinners Ian Blackwell and Monty Panesar could come under pressure in India as they fill in for Ashley Giles on England's tour.
Giles will not fly out on Sunday and could miss all three Tests after failing to recover from hip surgery.

Panesar, 23, and Blackwell, 27, have not played Tests but Fletcher says they are the best England can offer.

"It is asking a lot to send them in against India and players who play spin-bowling very well," he said.

But he also told BBC Five Live's Sportsweek: "They are capable, they bowled well during the last English summer."

Fletcher feels they were the only options available to England's selectors once they knew Giles was struggling to recover from the operation he had in December after coming home early from the Pakistan tour.

He added: "Ashley Giles is going to be a huge loss. We need a left-arm spinner and those two are the next best in the country.

"For some time [finding] spinners has been a problem."

Panesar of Northants and Somerset captain Blackwell will accompany 36-year-old Hampshire off-spinner Shaun Udal on tour.

Have your say on TMS

Udal played in all three Tests in Pakistan, taking three wickets at 92 runs apiece.

Indian right-handers Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag are all superb players of spin bowling.

Speaking more generally of the challenge of playing in India, Fletcher added: "We have got to lift ourselves up for this.

"It is the one area of the sub-continent where we haven't won since I have been involved with England.

"We've got to go out there and play some very good cricket."

England arrive in India

"BBC Sport"

England's cricketers touched down at Mumbai (Bombay) on Monday and were immediately ferried to their hotel.
Dozens of reporters and TV crews were left disappointed as captain Michael Vaughan declined interview requests.

The team left hastily through a side exit at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

But Vaughan and coach Duncan Fletcher are due to hold a news conference at 1330 GMT (7pm local time) which is expected to be well attended.

The first Test of three is in Nagpur on 1 March, while five one-day internationals will follow.

England are without main spinner Ashley Giles, and have a trio of slow bowlers (Shaun Udal, Monty Panesar and Ian Blackwell) who have played just three Tests between them.

Premier all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, meanwhile, could miss a match to be with his wife for the birth of his second child.

England expects. We'll be lucky to get anything out of these series though. India are arguably one of the best in both forms of the game.

Venues

Where will England be playing their games? In the following venues:

Tests

Nagpur

England will not get many pitches that suit them in India, but the one in Nagpur that hosts the first Test can offer pace and movement for seamers.

Jason Gillespie took nine wickets as Australia bundled out the hosts for scores of 185 and 200 in October 2004.

More worryingly for England, Sachin Tendulkar has had three centuries in seven innings here, averaging 105.83.

In a 1995 one-day match against New Zealand, a brick wall on the East stand collapsed, killing nine people.

Will host the First Test, 1st March.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mohali

The Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali is one of the great success stories of Indian cricket.

In 1992, it was a swamp with deep ravines but two years later staged its first Test and has never looked back.

One of the best grounds in India, it has superb practice facilities and a very spectator-friendly outlook.

The wicket itself is better suited to one-day cricket and has hosted a string of draws in Tests, though England were thrashed by 10 wickets in 2001.

Will host Second Test, 9th March

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mumbai

Mumbai (Bombay) is regarded as India's cricket capital, and that point has been reinforced since the emergence of hometown hero Sachin Tendulkar.

England won a Test at the Wankhede in 1980 when Ian Botham produced one of the great all-round performances, with 13 wickets and a score of 114.

But since then, England have lost twice, on the 1984-85 tour and in 1993.

The wicket tends to favour swing in the morning sessions while the spinners get some help over the last two days.

Will host Third Test, 18th March

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One Dayers

Delhi

England will mostly be playing their one-day internationals in small provincial stadiums, but Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla is the exception.

The latest refurbishment was still going on when Pakistan topped 300 here 12 months ago when winning the final match to take the one-day series 4-2.

A Nick Knight century and five Ashley Giles wickets gave England a two-run win in the exciting 2002 series.

In a 1999 Test against Pakistan, Anil Kumble took 10 wickets in an innings.

Will host First One Dayer, 28th March

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Faridabad

Situated 18 miles south-east of Delhi, the modern Nahar Singh Stadium will stage its eighth one-day international.

Kapil Dev played his final limited overs match here when West Indies, who gave Shiv Chanderpaul a debut, thrashed the hosts by a whopping 96 runs.

India have lost all but one of their five matches here, including a 2002 reverse to Zimbabwe which featured a memorable cameo from Doug Marillier.

Five times out of seven the team batting second has triumphed.

Will host second One Dayer, 31st March

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goa

Described by Lonely Planet as "succulently hybrid and determinedly individual", Goa is famous for its beaches and spaced out backpackers.

The former Portuguese enclave also boasts a cricket ground in Margao which has hosted five one-day internationals.

India have lost all three of their games at the Nehru Stadium, which was established in 1989.

The ground can take 27,300 fans and a few hundred Brits on holiday may well get their hands on the odd ticket.

Will host Third One Dayer,, 3rd April

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cochin

The first two one-day internationals played here achieved 300-plus scores, then Zimbabwe bowled out the hosts for 191 in India's only defeat in Cochin.

Giant convex floodlight pylons arch over an impressive ground with tiered seating which can hold 60,000 fans.

The Kerala Cricket Association, for it is in this southern state where Cochin is situated, is reportedly planning to launch a bid to host Tests here.

For trivia nuts, Sachin Tendulkar has taken two five-wicket hauls here.

Will host Fourth One Dayer, 6th April

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guwahati

The first one-day international at this ground was staged as recently as 1983, and there have been only 11 in total.

A negative aspect of the venue, located in the north-east of the country, is the predominance of heavy early morning fog and quickly fading evening light.

That may explain why Test cricket has never been played there but there are floodlights available for the ODIs.

The venue is capable of holding 25,000 and the highest ODI score is 333-6 by India against Zimbabwe in 2002.

Will host Fifth One Dayer, 9th April

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jamshedpur

The Keenan Stadium is named after a head of a steel factory which forms a distinctive backdrop to the ground, along with the Dalma Hills.

It was not until December 1983 that the ground staged its first international, and there have been just nine in all.

That first match featured a vintage West Indies side, and Gordon Greenidge and Viv Richards hit tons in a total of 333-8 that remains the ground's best.

There is a 19,000 capacity and crowds are known to be on the volatile side.

Will host Sixth One Dayer, 12th April

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indore

The series is likely to be decided by the time the two teams arrive in this city in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

That might be just as well for India, who have won just one of six matches here - including an abandonment on a dangerous wicket against Sri Lanka.

Ian Botham has fond memories of this place, having smashed 122 from 55 balls against Central Zone in 1981-82.

Kris Srikkanth, better known as a dashing batsman from the same era, once took 5-32 against New Zealand here.

Will host Seventh One Dayer, 15th April.

Next game is tomorrow, a practice match versus an unknown team in Mumbai. Who? We'll never know.

Day 1 of 3 versus Cricket Club of India

So it' the first day of our first match. How did we do? Let's see...

England: 299 All Out
CC of India: Yet to Bat

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Michael Vaughan, Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell all passed 50 but England failed to capitalise on day one of their India tour-opener in Mumbai (Bombay).

Bell helped the tourists recover from a mid-afternoon wobble at 203-5 with a patient 78 on a lively wicket.

But five wickets fell for 36 runs and England were bowled out for 299, with Paul Collingwood left unbeaten on 47.

Vaughan (54) and Strauss (51) shared a century stand but Kevin Pietersen (26) and Andrew Flintoff (20) went cheaply.

Young seamer Kshemal Waingarkar was the most impressive of the nine bowlers used in the three-day game, taking three wickets.

He dismissed Strauss with a slower ball and got Vaughan edging one which lifted sharply outside off-stump.

Vaughan got to 44 runs in boundaries, with nine coming in 13 balls, then registered his half-century in the first over after lunch with a straight six.

It was a welcome score for Strauss, who managed only 44 runs in four Test innings in Pakistan late last year.

Opening partner Matt Prior, promoted with Marcus Trescothick suffering flu, was bowled early on when the Brabourne Stadium pitch was most helpful to the bowlers.

Batsmen did not help themselves at times, though. Pietersen had time to smash a six before chopping onto his stumps.

And Flintoff chanced his arm regularly before drilling off-spinner Aniket Redkar straight to mid-on.

Bell, though, continued his fine form after being England's leading scorer in the Test series in Pakistan late last year.

He eventually perished after hoisting left-arm spinner Hitshu Bachani into the second tier of the pavilion as an attempt to repeat the stroke saw him stumped.

Bell and Collingwood made crease occupation the priority against the home team's slow men but the lower order struggled once exposed and left Collingwood to manipulate the strike.

Trescothick remained at the team hotel along with Durham fast bowler Liam Plunkett, who has a stomach ailment.

But both could feature later in the game as there is an agreement that England can use their entire squad.

England's only first-class game before the three-Test series starts at Baroda on 23 February. The first Test begins in Nagpur on 1 March.

Day 2 of 3 versus Cricket Club of India

We did OK yesterday. Now the moment of truth, how did the bowlers do? Let's find out.

CC of India: 251 All Out
England: 30-1

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Ian Blackwell took 4-57 and England's fielders made three run outs to bowl Cricket Club of India out for 251 on day two of the warm-up match.

England lost Andrew Strauss for a duck but the lead had grown to 78 by stumps, with the score 30-1 in Mumbai (Bombay).

Marcus Trescothick overcame a bout of flu to hit a sprightly 23 not out, with four boundaries in a single over.

Earlier there was a wicket each for pace bowlers Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard and spinner Monty Panesar.

And Kevin Pietersen, Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff all made dismissals with direct hits from the field.

Promoted to three in the second innings, Pietersen was unbeaten on four going into the final day.

England's three spinners, Shaun Udal, Panesar and Blackwell combined for 36 overs either side of tea, with Panesar returning economical figures of 1-42 from 17.

Blackwell, who has played in 28 one-day internationals but no Tests, boosted his chances of a debut in Nagpur in a fortnight.

Introduced in mid-afternoon he removed well-set Vinayak Samant (53) and Wilkin Mota (28) before dismissing Abid Nabi for a duck and Kshemal Waigankar for 10.

Beginning their reply to England's 299, Robin Uthappa and Sahil Kukreja (18) put on 40 from 16.2 overs, seeing off the opening spells of Harmison and Hoggard.

The openers had looked assured against pacemen Simon Jones, bowling off a short run-up, and Flintoff when Kukreja was run out.

Uthappa drove Jones into the covers and set off for a single, but Pietersen's throw to the striker's end caught Kukereja short of the crease.

Two balls later, new man Vinit Indulkar was run out by Vaughan at the striker's end after Uthappa had driven Jones to mid-on.

Harmison, who bowled a lot quicker in his second spell after changing ends, struck with his second ball when he squared up Uthappa and forced him to edge behind.

Amol Muzumdar was forced to retire hurt at lunch after being struck on the glove by a Flintoff short ball.

Left-hander Hrishikesh Shinde joined him in the dressing room soon after the interval when flashing at a delivery angled across him as Hoggard claimed a first success on tour.

After hitting 47 on day one, England all-rounder Paul Collingwood stayed to a sore back.

Day 3 of 3 versus CC of India

So it was the last day today of our first tour match. How did we do? Let's see.

England Second Innings: 265 All Out
CC of India: 75 All Out

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

England's bowlers warmed up for the first Test against India on 1 March by closing out a 238-run win over Cricket Club of India in Mumbai (Bombay).

The tourists only had a single session to bowl at the home side at the end of the three-day match, but needed just 27 overs to dismiss them for 75.

The wickets were shared around - Simon Jones, Steve Harmison, Monty Panesar and Ian Blackwell all taking two.

England hit 265 in the second innings, with Blackwell (59) in the runs.

But it was Marcus Trescothick (88) who showed the most fluent form.

Photos: Day three action from Brabourne Stadium

He proved he has recovered from the flu which forced him to miss the first innings by hitting 11 fours and two sixes in a 128-ball stay.

Some of England's other specialist batsmen were less successful on Monday, however.

Resuming on four in England's overnight 30-1, Kevin Pietersen clipped an early boundary but was run out in the first over when Trescothick sent him back.

Skipper Michael Vaughan (13) mis-timed a pull off Kshemal Waingankar and was caught at mid-wicket.

Andrew Flintoff faced only four balls before he played tentatively at a ball outside off-stump and was caught behind for five off medium-pacer Munish Ansari.

Trescothick revived England's fortunes in a partnership of 68 with Geraint Jones (30), with the pair favouring pull shots and drives.

The Somerset opener had a reprieve on 44 when wicket-keeper Vinayak Samant spilled a stumping chance, and went on to loft a six over long-on and another maximum with a slog-sweep.

Blackwell hit three sixes, all straight down the ground, with the third taking him to fifty from 66 balls, but he was caught at long-off attempting another.

England were all out on the stroke of tea and their bowlers then profited from being given short, sharp spells to strike quickly and often.

It was Jones, in his first outing since an ankle operation last autumn, who collected the first two wickets.

Showing impressive speed and bounce, he had Robin Uthappa trapped leg before by a full delivery and Vinit Indulkar well held at second slip.

Flintoff and Liam Plunkett continued the momentum to leave the hosts 39-4.

And England moved in for the kill once the ball was tossed to Harmison, who needed just three overs to take his two wickets.

The spinners mopped up the tail to complete a highly satisfactory day's work for England, especially from the bowlers.

So that's that. England win by 238 runs. Our next match is from 23rd February - 25th February against the President's XI in Baroda.

The format for your Match Reports look familiar :P Good start for England. Looking forward to seeing our spinners in action - Blackwell (because he did well against CC of India), Monty Panesar (new) and Shaun Udal (Hampshire!). Hopefully Kevin Pietersen and Freddie Flintoff can stay at the crease for longer... and together.

England Squad hampered by illness

"BBC Sport"

England's spin bowling dilemma has been further complicated by news that Ian Blackwell, Monty Panesar and Shaun Udal are all struggling with stomach bugs.

Key fast bowler Simon Jones was also suffering on Wednesday, on the eve of a three-day warm-up match against a Board President's XI in Baroda.

The tourists hoped to use the game to finalise plans for the first Test.

All-rounder Paul Collingwood is set to miss the game with back trouble, with the team to be named in the morning.

Unlike the opening match, England will only be able to field 11 players from start to finish, as the game counts towards first-class statistics.

Panesar and Blackwell were at least able to travel to Wednesday's net practice with their team-mates but Udal and Jones were absent.

However the line-up is affected in this three-day game, Steve Harmison believes England's pace attack are now well-equipped for whatever conditions they face in India.

"All the bowlers have come here knowing the pitches for the Tests would be quite flat," said the Durham bowler.

"We have got most bases covered; we have two bowlers who can bowl at quite a lively pace. Simon (Jones) bowls at a lively pace and reverse swings it.

"I learned in Pakistan that you bowl according to the situation you are actually put in at a time."

Wicket-keeper Geraint Jones is looking to the game as another step towards preparation for the Test series, starting on 1 March.

But the tourists will have just three days afterwards, with a day's travel to Nagpur, before facing India.

"This match should be another step up in gear towards the first Test," Jones told BBC Radio Five Live.

"We want to gradually go through the gears so when we get to that first Test we're hitting our straps."

Munaf Patel and VRV Singh, reportedly the fastest bowlers in the country, will play for the home side.

Have Your Say on TMS
Discuss England's options

Seamers SS Paul and Sri Sreesanth, who took part in India's 4-1 one-day series victory in Pakistan this month, are also included.

Test squad members Wasim Jaffer and Gautam Gambhir are set to open the batting ahead of captain Venugopal Rao and promising left-hander Suresh Riana.

The selection indicates England could face markedly different conditions in the two matches.

Day 1 of 3 versus Board President's XI

So today was the first day of play between England and the Board President's XI. How did we do? Let's have a look.

England: 238 All Out
B.P's XI: 93-1

Hampered by illness and injury, England saw the Indian Board President's XI race to 93-1 in reply to their 238 after day one of their warm-up match.

Wasim Jaffer hit seven fours in his 48 before spinner Ian Blackwell trapped him with the day's final ball.

England captain Michael Vaughan was ruled out before the start and Simon Jones and Shaun Udal were both ill.

Kevin Pietersen retired hurt with back trouble after hitting 47 and the rest of the batsmen struggled.

Geraint Jones (46) led some useful lower order resistance with Blackwell (33) and Liam Plunkett (36).

Munaf Patel, reputedly one of the fastest bowlers in India, took 5-59.

Pietersen had begun to rebuild the innings from 72-4, and looked in control in his 57-ball innings before succumbing to the niggle.

Paul Collingwood was another absentee, as his sore back continued to cause him discomfort, leaving just five fit batsmen to start the game.

Spinners Blackwell and Monty Panesar were called in, even though they too had been struggling with the stomach bug going through the side.

Neither was needed at the start as stand-in captain Marcus Trescothick won the toss and opted to bat.

But despite a brisk start, England's upper order was unable to establish itself.

On 18, Trescothick's judgement erred when he was beaten by Subramani Badrinath's throw from the boundary as he attempted a third run.

Ian Bell was next to go, for 17, square-cutting a ball from first-change bowler SS Paul straight to Jaffer in the gully.

Patel knocked back Andrew Strauss' off stump as he attempted to drive in the next over, with his score 23.

And worse was to come for England as Flintoff faced just 11 balls before driving Patel to mid-off for a lone single.

Pietersen first showed signs of discomfort after lunch, which England reached at 78-4.

He continued at the crease after physio Kirk Russell applied a back support and strapping but soon decided to leave the field.

Wicket-keeper Jones played a patient knock a pitch that had a tinge of grass.

He was boosted by the arrival of Blackwell, who struck six fours in his 33 before a loose drive at spinner Ramesh Powar.

And Plunkett continued to enhance his reputation as an all-rounder in a 60-ball stay that included six fours.

But Jones' dismissal, bowled by Munaf, triggered a collapse and the visitors lost their last three wickets for the addition of just six runs.

So it was a bad day for England.

Vaughan adds to growing injury list

"BBC Sport"

Captain Michael Vaughan is just one of England's injury concerns with six days to go before first Test in India.
Vaughan was ruled out of the final warm-up game, which began on Thursday, with a recurrence of knee trouble.

Fast bowler Simon Jones suffered a stomach bug, Paul Collingwood was unfit and Kevin Pietersen retired hurt in the middle of the day with back trouble.

Vaughan had surgery in December for a problem in his right knee, which forced an early return from Pakistan.

But he felt soreness after last weeks's tour opener and had a pain-killing injection after encountering more trouble in net practice.

"An injection was performed but it's too soon for that to have taken hold and we found he couldn't really play today," said medical officer Dr Peter Gregory.

"We're really waiting to see the effect of that injection.

"The injury in Pakistan was to the inside of his knee; this time it's on the outside and I'm more confident."

Marcus Trescothick, who did the job in Vaughan's absence late last year, took over as captain for the game against an Indian Board President's XI.

Pietersen hit an unbeaten during the game in Baroda 47 before being helped from the field.

He showed signs of discomfort after lunch but continued at the crease after physio Kirk Russell applied a back support and strapping to the problem area.

A pulled six caused him to grimace in pain, however, and he retreated to the dressing room five minutes later.

England officials are unworried, though, saying the problem is not related to the side strain he suffered while in Pakistan.

"He just tweaked it and we took him off as a precautionary measure. I hope it gets better in the next couple of days," said coach Duncan Fletcher.

"We wanted to make sure it didn't get any worse before the first Test."

With Collingwood ruled out of the match with back spasms, the tourists' batting resources are now under strain.

A stomach bug, which has swept through the tour party, also kept Jones and Shaun Udal out of the game against an Indian Board President's XI.

Pace bowler Jones missed a chance to proved his recovery from ankle surgery after he was ruled out with a stomach bug.

"At one stage we felt he would need a decent bowl if we wanted to select him in that first Test match," Fletcher added.

"We wanted to give him a chance but he was in such a bad state we sent him back to the hotel."

Bowling coach Troy Cooley is working on assimilating match conditions as a fitness test for Jones.

Day 2 of 3 versus B.P's XI

So it was the second day today of our final tour match.

B.P's XI: 342-8d
England: 10-1

"BBC Sport"

England endured a tough day in the field on Friday as the India Board President's XI declared on 342-8.

Starting their second innings 104 runs adrift, the tourists then lost Andrew Strauss cheaply to be 10-1 at stumps.

The hosts had been strongly positioned at 269-3 at tea thanks to Gautam Gambhir (108) and Suresh Raina (62).

Steve Harmison (3-72) and Andrew Flintoff (3-74) responded well but the prospect of defeat still looms for injury-ravaged England.

The star of the show on a day of stifling heat was left-handed opener Gambhir.

His century sent a message to the India selectors who had discarded him from the squad for the first Test, starting next Wednesday.

He was fortunate at times, however.

Spilled by Marcus Trescothick on Thursday, he was missed again by England's errant wicket-keeper Geraint Jones from a leg-glance off Harmison.

Gambhir had added 64 with Dheeraj Jadhav for the second wicket before Harmison took England's only wicket of the morning session.

Jadhav attempted to square cut and a top-edge presented Jones with an easy catch, ending a 64-run stand for the second wicket.

Suresh Raina, the teenage left-hander in India's Test and one-day squads, then hit 62 in an 86-run stand with Gambhir.

Raina flashed the luckless Matthew Hoggard past Flintoff in the slips and survived a stumping chance when Monty Panesar drew him down the track.

Again, there was just one wicket in the session - and it came when Flintoff's slower ball was spooned by Gambhir straight to point.

After tea, Raina was caught in the deep off Panesar before England decided to take the second new ball.

Flintoff immediately bowled new batsman Subramaniam Badrinath.

Harmison dislodged skipper Venugopal Rao and wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik - both falling to slip catches - and Vikram Singh was the last man out, bowled by a Flintoff yorker.

Ramesh Powar clubbed 23 off just 17 balls before the declaration.

Strauss and Marcus Trescothick only had eight overs to face before stumps but the task was beyond the Middlesex man, who edged his 10th ball to second slip.

Paul Collingwood, who missed selection for the game because of a back problem, was able to spend time on the ground as a substitute fielder.

And paceman Simon Jones was fit enough after a stomach bug to take on some of the 12th man duties.

But England's attack was one man short with Liam Plunkett unable to bowl because of a bruised heel.

Kevin Pietersen (sore back) was at the ground but did not enter the action.

Captain Michael Vaughan (knee) has played no part in the match and is doubtful for the Nagpur Test.

'Nuff said. We trail by 94 with 9 wickets in hand.
