The Commonwealth Games was officially opened by the Queen this morning (for people in Britain) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The Commonwealth Games pits the 71 Commonwealth nations together, just like the Olympic Games. For those of you who don't know, the Commonwealth is "an association of independent sovereign states, most of which are former colonies once governed by the United Kingdom as part of the British Empire. It was once known as the British Commonwealth (or British Commonwealth of Nations), and many still call it by that name, either for historical reasons or to distinguish it from the many other commonwealths around the world." ![]() Fireworks at the Opening Ceremony ![]() The Yarra River The Countries taking part: A: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Australia B: The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Brunei C: Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Cayman Islands D: Dominica E: England F: Falkland Islands, Fiji Islands G: The Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guernsey, Guyana I: India, Isle of Man J: Jamaica, Jersey K: Kenya, Kiribati L: Lesotho M: Malawi, Malaysia, The Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique N: Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Niue, Norfolk Islands, Northern Ireland P: Pakistan, Papua New Guinea S: St Kitts & Nevis, St Helena, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Samoa, Scotland, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland T: Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos, Tuvalu U: Uganda V: Vanuatu W: Wales Z: Zambia Commonwealth A to Z provided by BBC Sport Events: Aquatics (Swimming), Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Bowls, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Weightlifting. As you probably know, the stadium is now home to the Manchester City Football Club. The next games are in New Delhi, India, in 2010. It will be the second time the Games have gone to Asia after the Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) Games in 1998. The Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Telstra Dome will be the biggest stadiums in use for the events. ![]() Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) ![]() Telstra Dome You Americans probably don't care about the Games because your not in the Commonwealth, but does it get any publicity over there? I was watching a show called "World Sport" - i like that show - shows all the sports. And i was looking at squash - it was about the English team and that it had good players and basically the main trophy they played for was the CommonWealth Games - they were dissapointed it wasnt included in the Olympics in London . It was interesting - Looking at that English team , i think theyll win it in Squash. |

Im telling you , whenever i get the chance to watch it - its cool because i see all these different kinds of sports - its nice. I wish theyd have football in this , i wouldve liked to see Gambia play. They have a tall goalkeeper! , last time i was watching a match between them and Senegal , it was a heated match lol , the goalkeeper was arguing and all - i was like : "just play damnit!" lol . I wonder if Jatto Ceesay still plays for them. |
