The Commonwealth Games was officially opened by the Queen this morning (for people in Britain) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The Commonwealth Games pits the 71 Commonwealth nations together, just like the Olympic Games.

For those of you who don't know, the Commonwealth is "an association of independent sovereign states, most of which are former colonies once governed by the United Kingdom as part of the British Empire. It was once known as the British Commonwealth (or British Commonwealth of Nations), and many still call it by that name, either for historical reasons or to distinguish it from the many other commonwealths around the world."

The last games were in 2002 when they were held in Manchester (England) with the City of Manchester Stadium hosting some events. As you probably know, the stadium is now home to the Manchester City Football Club. The next games are in New Delhi, India, in 2010. It will be the second time the Games have gone to Asia after the Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) Games in 1998.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Telstra Dome will be the biggest stadiums in use for the events.

You Americans probably don't care about the Games because your not in the Commonwealth, but does it get any publicity over there?

Would any of you like to see Cricket in the Commonwealth Games? I think it should. The major Test playing Nations are all in the Commonwealth, so why not?

I was watching a show called "World Sport" - i like that show - shows all the sports. And i was looking at squash - it was about the English team and that it had good players and basically the main trophy they played for was the CommonWealth Games - they were dissapointed it wasnt included in the Olympics in London . It was interesting - Looking at that English team , i think theyll win it in Squash.

Im telling you , whenever i get the chance to watch it - its cool because i see all these different kinds of sports - its nice.

I wish theyd have football in this , i wouldve liked to see Gambia play. They have a tall goalkeeper! , last time i was watching a match between them and Senegal , it was a heated match lol , the goalkeeper was arguing and all - i was like : "just play damnit!" lol . I wonder if Jatto Ceesay still plays for them.

England's cycling quartet cruise past Australia to win gold in the men's 4,000m team pursuit.
Victoria Pendleton edges out Australia's Anna Meares to take gold in the women's sprint.

Gregor Tait wins Scotland's third gold medal in the pool with victory in the 200m backstroke.

Chris Cook wins gold in the men's 100m breastroke and England's quartet edge out Scotland to win the gold in a thrilling men's 4x200m relay.

Scotland's Sheena Sharp and Susan Jackson edge out England's Sharon Lee and Helen Spittles to win gold in the women's 50m rifle prone pairs.

England's Mick Gault took silver in the 10m air pistol pairs alongside Nick Baxter to equal Karen Pickering's English record of 13 Commonwealth medals.

He missed a chance to break the record when he and Simon Lucas only came fifth in their qualifying round of the men's 25m Standard Pistol Pairs.

Elsewhere, in the swimming pool Australia's Libby Lenton claims three gold medals in a day.

She wins the women's 100m freestyle with the second-fastest time in history, the 200m breaststroke and rounded it off by anchoring the Australian team to victory in the 4x200m relay, in which England took silver.
