[Ice Hockey] Hull elected to Elite League

Hull Stingrays have been elected to British ice hockey's top-flight division - the Elite League.
After recently, playing in the British National League and English Premier League, the Stingrays will compete with the UK's big clubs next season.


Club owner Mike Pack told BBC Radio Humberside: "It's fantastic news, because next year we'll be entertaining the best teams in the country."

The Stingrays are coached by Great Britain national coach Rick Strachan.

San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton finished the NHL season on a winning note by winning the league's Most Valuable Player award.
Thornton was the league's leading scorer with 125 points from 29 goals and 96 assists.


The 26-year-old beat New York Ranger Jaromir Jagr and Calgary Flames netminder Miika Kiprusoff to the award.

Russian star Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals won the rookie of the year honour.

Ovechkin became just the second player in NHL history to score 50 goals and 100 points in his debut season, beating Sydney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Crosby was was the youngest player in NHL history to amass 100 points in a season.

Thornton, who was drafted first overall by Boston in 1997, was traded by the Bruins to the San Jose Sharks on 30 November and received 67 first-place votes for the MVP award.

As well as the top honour, Thornton also won the Art Ross trophy as the NHL's leading scorer while team mate Jonathan Cheechoo won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the league's top goalscorer with 56.

Buffalo Sabres' Lindy Ruff lifted the Jack Adams trophy as coach of the year while Detroit Red Wings Nicklas Lidstrom won the defenceman of the year title for a fourth time.

Carolina Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour, who led his team to its first Stanley Cup on Monday, picked up the Frank J. Selke trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward.
