EPL Match 1 versus Middlesbrough

Our first game of the EPL was against Middlesbrough, who are now managed by that wally who missed that penalty in Euro 96 - Gareth Southgate. We lined up in a 4-3-3, with Seol, Doyle and Kitson up front. Leroy 'Legend' Lita was on the bench.

"BBC Sport"

Substitute Leroy Lita capped a stunning turnaround for Reading as they sealed victory on their Premiership debut.

Middlesbrough, now managed by former defender Gareth Southgate, led 2-0 thanks to a Stewart Downing volley and a close-range effort from Yakubu.

But Dave Kitson pulled a goal back before Steve Sidwell's left-foot shot two minutes later put Reading level.

Lita then blasted home the winner within 10 minutes of coming on after some sloppy Middlesbrough defending.

Southgate will be alarmed by the manner of his side's capitulation after taking an early advantage.

"BBC Sport"

They went ahead after 11 minutes when Yakubu swung in a cross from the left and Downing found the corner of the net with a cleanly-struck volley.

Then they doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Marcus Hahnemann failed to deal with a low Fabio Rochemback free-kick.

The ball fell to Yakubu, who had the simple task of slotting past the stranded goalkeeper.

Nothing was going Reading's way and it would have been easy for heads to go down in the home camp.

But then Kitson reduced the deficit after a fine spell of pressure on the Boro backline.

Seol Ki-Hyeon beat Julio Arca easily and crossed for Kitson, who overcame a poor first touch to score Reading's first Premiership goal.

After waiting 135 years for their first top-flight strike, the second arrived within seconds when Ivar Ingimarsson's low centre fell perfectly into the path of Sidwell, who sidefooted home.

The home side were inches away from a third either side of the break as Middlesbrough started to look shell-shocked.

Before the interval, Graeme Murty's cross flew just out of the reach of Kevin Doyle.

Then Andrew Davies, who replaced the ineffective and injured Arca at half-time, came to Boro's rescue with a last-ditch header.

Reading finally went ahead through their own substitute on 55 minutes.

Lita, who came on for the injured Kitson, found the goal at his mercy after Seol's cross from the right led to panic in the Boro defence.

Middlesbrough failed to muster much of a response until the closing stages, when Mark Viduka went close twice.

First, he was denied by Hahnemann after a mistake by Ibrahima Sonko.

Then the Australian had a goal ruled out for offside moments later, although the decision looked questionable.

Nice one lads - 3 valuable points, even at this early stage. Boro won't be happy with their shocking capitulation. Having said that, after seeing the Reading goals on MOTD, in my opinion only Sidwell's goal wasn't scrappy. No worries though. After the game, the managers said:

"Steve Coppell"

"Both managers could criticise aspects of play but from our point of view it was terrific to come back like that.
"We started nervously and looked anxious, which is human nature given the position we're in.

"When their second one went in, we relaxed a bit and had a go at them."

"Gareth Southgate"

"We knew we had to dig in after going 2-0 up and Reading threw everything at us.
"We missed a great opportunity. They played like that because of the energy and spirit they showed last season."

Leeds Reject Royals Kilgallon bid

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Leeds chairman Ken Bates revealed the club has rejected an offer in excess of £1m from Reading for highly-rated defender Matthew Kilgallon.
The 22-year-old former trainee has attracted interest from a number of clubs but will not be allowed to leave.

"We actually turned down an offer for more than £1m from Reading for him so he's going nowhere," Bates told Yorkshire Radio.

"If he continues to develop, I see him as a natural successor to John Terry."

Leeds have only collected four points from as many Championship matches but Bates also rejected speculation the club is lining up a replacement for manager Kevin Blackwell.

Ah, shame that. He's going to be a great player in years to come. Our next game is tonight away to Aston Villa.[/color]

EPL Match 2 @ Aston Villa

So it was Martin O'Neill's first game managing Villa at home, and our first away game in the Prem. Ever. Davey Kitson was injured, so Lita and Doyle started up front with Seol playing in the midfield in a 4-4-2.

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Aston Villa's encouraging start under new manager Martin O'Neill continued with a win over 10-man Reading.

The visitors took an early lead after Seol Ki-Hyeon's cross was calmly headed in by Kevin Doyle, before Villa equalised with a debatable penalty.

Ibrahima Sonko was adjudged to have fouled Luke Moore, which resulted in the Senegal defender's dismissal and Juan Pablo Angel's converted penalty.

Villa's winner came after Gareth Barry headed in Peter Whittingham's cross.

O'Neill had received a rapturous reception when he emerged from the tunnel before the start of the game and his decision to bring on Whittingham only served to further illustrate the former Celtic boss' apparent Midas touch.

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

With practically his first kick of the game Whittingham delivered an inviting cross that Barry was able to glance past Marcus Hahnemann.

Not that O'Neill did not experience some anxious moments in his first win as Villa manager as his team struggled to react to Reading's early goal.

Villa had secured a creditable draw away at Arsenal on Saturday by playing on the counterattack but Doyle's strike required the home side to adopt a different tactical approach.

Initially Villa appeared without the wit to unpick Reading, but Sonko's clumsy defending allowed the home side to equalise as well providing them with a crucial man advantage.

To their credit even at a numerical disadvantage Reading were never outclassed by Villa, but they were unable to really stretch the home side's defence.

In their opening Premiership match on Reading had conceded two early goals, but Steve Coppell's side did not make the same mistake on Wednesday as they took a fourth-minute lead.

Seol jinked past Moore before flighting the ball to the far post, a cross that was expertly headed in by the unmarked Doyle.

The South Korean midfielder - powerful and strong on the ball - had an impressive game for Reading and early in the second half he tested Sorensen with an accurate shot

Having taken an early lead it was Reading that continued to look the more likely side to score, notably when Steve Sidwell flashed a shot past the post.

Before Angel scored his penalty the Colombian had had the ball in the net, but he was ruled offside.

Moore also had a goal disallowed, again the result of Angel straying into an offside posiiton.

Angel's decision making proved shrewder from the penalty spot after referee Lee Mason ruled Sonko had denied Moore a goalscoring opportunity and the Colombian sent Hahnemann the wrong way.

Sonko's sending-off prompted a tactical switch as Coppell withdrew striker Leroy Lita, replacing him with Brynjar Gunnarsson.

Moore continued to trouble the Reading defence and although he was unable to add a third goal the visitors were never able to get enough men forward to threaten the Villa goal.

How crap. That penalty that was given didn't look like a penalty to me.

"Martin O'Neill"

"We're delighted with the points but we know we've a lot of work to do.
"I've got to do a lot of work for the crowd to stay with us as they've seen a few false dawns in the past.

"Psychologically the sending off gave us a big, big lift. I'm delighted with the three points."

"Steve Coppell"

It was an awkard slip - a tangle of legs - but Ibrahima Sonko wasn't looking at the Aston Villa player.
"It's not our way. Last year we didn't have a player sent off but you knew it was going to happen.

"It was a massive turning point, but I'm pleased with out contribution to the game and didn't go into our shell."

EPL Match 3 @ Wigan

This game saw Sodje's debut in the first team. Lita and Doyle remained up front.

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Wigan striker Emile Heskey scored his first goal since February to give his side victory over Reading.

Heskey, who had earlier headed against the woodwork, latched on to Lee McCulloch's flick and slotted the ball past Royals keeper Marcus Hahnemann.

The Latics were well on top and Heskey almost added a second goal when his lob landed on the roof of Reading's net.

Reading created few chances but almost snatched a draw late on when Chris Kirkland kept out Leroy Lita's shot.

Wigan should have made the points safe long before then but still held on for their first Premiership victory of the season.

And Heskey, who joined the Latics in a £5.5m summer move from Birmingham, played a pivotal role in his side's success.

The former England striker managed only four Premiership goals last season but his partnership with Henri Camara showed promise early on here before the Senegal international limped off on 20 minutes with a hamstring injury.

Camara teed up the 28-year-old to fire wide in the fourth minute and was also involved in the build-up to the corner from which Heskey's header rattled the woodwork.

It was Wigan who were doing all the attacking, with Reading's only real response being a low shot from Lita which was skidding goalwards before Kirkland pushed it away.

And Camara's departure did not alter the fluency of the home side's front play.

His replacement David Connolly set up Antonio Valencia to fire in a powerful save that Hahnemann had to push away.

Wigan kept coming forward and eventually got their reward in the 38th minute when McCulloch flicked on Denny Landzaat's pass for Heskey to nudge the ball into the net.

Another McCulloch flick almost set Connolly free before the break but this time Hahnemann just beat the striker to the ball.

Reading remained on the back foot after the break with their only chance of note coming when Ivar Ingimarsson met Nicky Shorey's corner but could not direct his header goalwards.

At the other end McCulloch sent a rasping shot flying into the side netting before Heskey wasted a golden chance to wrap things up when he got too much purchase on his lob.

Royals boss Steve Coppell sent on wingers John Oster and Stephen Hunt to try and change the direction of the game but for all their attacking effort, the visitors were achieving little.

But Wigan were unable to finish them off, with Graham Kavanagh the next culprit - shooting weakly against Hahnemann's legs after running clear.

And Reading almost punished them in the dying seconds when Oster found Lita in space only for Kirkland to rush out to block his shot.

We spurned numerous chances, but I don't think we deserved to lose. The managers said after the game:

"Steve Coppell"

"In the first half we looked to be going nowhere and the two sides were cancelling each other out.
"We had to respond and tried to play when we could but it was very conjested in the middle.

"Their goal was disappointing but we looked capable of getting back into the match, in particular our chance at the end - but it wasn't to be."

"Paul Jewell"

"Thankfully we have got our first win and that was important, even if it wasn't pretty at times.
"We had chances to kill the game off long before the end when we were hanging on.

"In the end we were grateful for a great save from Chris Kirkland but we fully justified the three points."

Our next game is crucial. It is on the 11th September and is against Manchester City. A win would be nice.

Reading Sign De La Cruz

Why?

"BBC Sport"

Reading have completed the signing of Ecuador defender Ulises De La Cruz.
The 32-year-old right-back, who left Aston Villa at the end of last season, has signed a one-year deal at the Madejski Stadium.

He has been training with Reading for a week but is not fit enough to feature in Saturday's game against Wigan.

Royals boss Steve Coppell told his club's website: "I was quite surprised Ulises was still available. He is a player who can compete at this level."

De La Cruz played 99 games for Villa in a four-year stint at Villa Park.

He added: "I have not played in the last couple of months so I need to quickly adapt to the team. But I have been training with the players for the last few days and really enjoyed it.

"I will work hard for a place in the side. I want to keep playing for my country so I need to get into the Reading team."

Reading Get Bikey For Season Loan

Why?

"BBC Sport"

Reading have signed Cameroon international defender Andre Bikey on a season-long loan from Lokomotiv Moscow.
Bikey, 21, had been on trail with the club during pre-season when his chances of joining permanently suffered a setback after a sending-off.

"He did well in Sweden until he blotted his copybook by getting sent off in the last game," Royals boss Steve Coppell told his club's website.

"But we feel that happened because he was so determined to impress."

He added: "He's a Cameroon international with good experience so we hopes he takes the opportunity and plays a full role in our season."

Reading have the option to sign the player permanently depending on how he fares during the season.

Royals Sign Mate On Loan

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Reading have signed Hungary Under-21 international defender Peter Mate on a one-year loan deal.
The 21-year-old has joined the Royals from Debreceni, who are the reigning champions of Hungary.

He said: "I am very happy to sign for Reading. When I was young I dreamed of playing in the Premiership and now that dream has come true.

"It is a very good opportunity for me and I hope to perform well enough to stay here longer than one year."

Mate joins Ulises de la Cruz and Andre Bikey as new additions at the Madejski in the past week.

Reading director of football Nick Hammond added: "We're delighted to sign Peter. Like Andre Bikey, he is another quality young international player who is eager to succeed in England.

"He has great potential and all the attributes to make an impact. We hope he can be a big success at Reading Football Club."

Chairman John Madejski said: "I would like to welcome Peter to Reading Football Club. He arrives at a very exciting time and we look forward to seeing him progress with us in the Premiership."

Lita Arrested - Investigated For GBH

"BBC News"

A Premiership footballer has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after he allegedly headbutted a man during a night out.
Reading striker Leroy Lita, 21, is being questioned by police in Bristol over the alleged attack in Haymarket, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The England Under 21 striker signed for the Premiership side last summer from Bristol City for £1m.

He has been accused of leaving his alleged victim with a black eye.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman said: "A 21-year-old man from Reading voluntarily attended Trinity Road Police Station in Bristol at 8.30am today, where he was arrested on suspicion of GBH.

"His arrest follows the alleged assault of a 24-year-old man from Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Haymarket."

The Congo-born forward, who scored Reading's winner against Middlesbrough in the opening game of the season, is expected to be released on bail later.

Coppell: Lita May Be Dropped

"BBC Sport"

Reading manager Steve Coppell says he may drop Leroy Lita after the striker was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
England Under-21 international Lita, 21, was questioned by police in Bristol on Wednesday after allegedly headbutting a man during a night out.

"Personally I am very disappointed and I will speak with Leroy," said Coppell.

"I don't have all the details yet but it may end up having an effect on my team selection."

A club statement added: "Director of football Nick Hammond has confirmed that he and Leroy Lita travelled to Bristol on Wednesday for the player to speak to Avon and Somerset Police with regard to an alleged incident at the weekend.

"As this is an ongoing matter neither the club nor the player will make any further comment on the incident at this stage."

Reading Players In Internationals

Just a quick roundup about the players who played for the national teams during the international break. Here we go...

Kevin Doyle (Republic of Ireland)

Ireland lost 1-0 to the Germans in their opening Euro 2008 qualifier, and Kevin Doyle was 'one of the best players in Steve Staunton's side'. In the 75th minute, Doyle nearly won a penalty as a German defender tangled with him in the area. When a German free kick was given, Steve Staunton kicked a water bottle in disgust and was dismissed by the referee. Doyle was replaced in the 79th minute by Sunderland's Stephen Elliott.

Seol Ki-Hyeon (South Korea)

Seol scored for Korea in their 1-1 draw against Iran in an Asian Nations Cup qualifer. It was a header in the 45th minute.

Brynjar Gunnarsson and Ivar Ingimarsson (Iceland)

Both played as Iceland demolished Northern Ireland 3-0. Gunnarsson set up the opening goal for Thorvaldsson and played 75 minutes. Ivar played the full 90.

Andre Bikey (Cameroon)

New loan signing Bikey was in the Cameroon squad as they beat Rwanda 3-0 in an African Cup of Nations qualifer.

Graeme Murty (Scotland)

Murts wa sinjured for Scotland's 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands. He's out of the game against Lithuania as well with a hamstring problem.

EPL Match 4 versus Manchester City

Our first Prem game televised on Sky Sports, at home to City, whose hom form has been abysmal. We played well.

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Reading earned their second Premiership victory of the season thanks to Ivar Ingimarsson's goal against Manchester City at the Madejski Stadium.

The Icelander latched on to Bobby Convey's first-half free-kick to nod the ball into the corner of the net.

City dominated for long spells but were not clinical enough, Paul Dickov firing at Marcus Hahnemann and Georgios Samaras seeing a shot deflected wide.

Ousmane Dabo was sent off late on for using his elbow as Reading held on.

They deserved the three points for effort and commitment, but in truth City will be astonished to leave with nothing to show for their efforts.

Stuart Pearce's side dominated possession for much of the contest and if they had been more clinical in the final third could well have won the game.

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

They started brightly and had immediate joy down the right, with Trevor Sinclair and Micah Richards pouring forward at every opportunity.

One lovely passing move sent Richards to the byline, but Dickov could only strike the teenager's fine pull-back straight at Hahnemann from 10 yards.

Joey Barton was having a big influence on the game, spraying passes all around the pitch and going on one mazy run that ended with a cross Bernardo Corradi should have tucked away.

When a goal did come, it was against the run of play - to the delight of the home faithful.

Leroy Lita was fouled by Sylvain Distin and when the free-kick was swung in, Ingimarsson bravely stooped in a crowded box to head past Nicky Weaver into the far corner of the net.

As City dominated possession it was Reading who again fashioned the chances, Ingimarsson once more ghosting into the box to see a fierce left-foot shot tipped over by Weaver.

City were having trouble marking at set-pieces and Seol Ki-Hyeon was the next to take advantage, the unmarked South Korean powering a header over from Convey's corner.

Pearce was his usual frenetic self on the touchline and he had every right to be frustrated as City were continually let down by their inability to create clear-cut chances.

His mood did not improve when he took off Richards just before the hour mark, the 18-year-old impetuously shrugging off his manager's handshake and from the bench throwing his shirt towards the touchline.

But bringing on Samaras for Dickov at the same time was nearly a masterstroke, as just seconds later the Greek striker forced a save from Hahnemann with his first touch.

Samaras went perilously close again soon after, his 20-yard drive deflecting off Ibrahima Sonko and Hahnemann completing the job by tipping it round the post.

But the visitors continued to struggle in both boxes. They failed to clear a cross at the other end and Kevin Doyle lashed over from six yards when he should have doubled the lead.

City's hopes of earning a point all-but evaporated when Dabo led with his arm in a challenge with Steve Sidwell and was dismissed by Howard Webb.

Weaver had to be at his best to tip Brynjar Gunnarsson's sensational 30-yard piledriver around the post at full stretch as Reading closed out the game.

Lovely jubbly.

"Steve Coppell"

"The back four have been terrific and with Marcus Hahnemann in goal too, they are a unit of five.
"Once a group of players are together for this long there's a certain amount of telepathy between them and they were really tested by City tonight.

"We've still got an awful lot to work on and it's hard to know where we are really, but we're certainly competing."

"Stuart Pearce"

"We're disappointed but I thought that was the best we've played this season. If you don't take your chances this is what happens.
"We're not conceding many which is good but we're not scoring and we need to."

On teenager Micah Richards' outburst when he was taken off, Pearce added: "I have to educate him, simple as that. I want to see spirit in all my players."

EPL Match 5 @ Sheffield United

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

Reading claimed a first away win in the Premiership by beating Sheffield United in a pulsating match at Bramall Lane.

Kevin Doyle got Reading off to a lightning start, burying his shot past Ian Bennett after just 16 seconds.

The visitors dominated a struggling Blades side and Seol Ki-Hyeon made it 2-0 with a low drive after 25 minutes.

United rallied after the break and Rob Hulse hit home an Ade Akinbiyi header to close the gap but it was not enough and United remain without a league win.

Doyle caught United by surprise when he burst through to score with just seconds on the clock.

The Republic of Ireland striker needed just a handful of touches to control Bobby Convey's ball over the top before firing a left-footed shot straight past Bennett - an inauspicious start to the keeper's United debut.

As Blades boss Neil Warnock simmered on the sidelines, his side conjured an immediate response with Akinbiyi using his muscle to put Reading under pressure.

Posted Image

"BBC Sport"

But the fightback was short-lived and a rampant Reading side poured forward with some excellent passing through midfield from Steve Sidwell and Convey.

Ki-Hyeon, contributing some good work down the right, saw his shot well saved by Bennett and minutes later James Harper was inches away as his drilled effort hit the far-post.

A second goal for the visitors seemed inevitable and it came after 25 minutes when Ki-Hyeon hammered home from Leroy Lita's neat lay-off. It was the South Korean's first goal since his £1.5m summer move from Wolves.

United looked increasingly out of their depth against their fellow Premiership newcomers and their brief forays forward were quickly dealt with by Ibrahima Sonko and Ivar Ingimarsson

Akinbiyi continued to work hard up while Mikele Leigertwood and Phil Jagielka both sent shots sailing high and wide.

But as the half-time whistle blew, the Blades retreated to the sound of boos ringing round Bramall Lane.

Warnock brought on Keith Gillespie and Alan Quinn for David Unsworth and Paul Ifill to inject some pace after the break.

And, just like the opening stages of the match, the half frantically burst into life with Quinn fluffing an early shot and Doyle and Lita going close at the other end.

An enlivened United side ensured they played their part in the break-neck speed and, after a sustained period of pressure, Hulse snuck through.

Akinbiyi rose strongly to chest the ball down to Hulse, who held off Sonko before turning and squeezing the ball in at the far post after 61 minutes.

The goal seemed to rattle Reading and the battling Akinbiyi almost pounced for an equaliser when keeper Marcus Hahnemann lost control of the ball when he tangled with his team-mate Graeme Murty.

Two good chances to equalise fell to substitute Gillespie but he floated his first effort high and had a better right-footed strike saved by Hahnemann.

An urgent Blades side continued to press forward but Hahnemann's safe hands kept shots from Jagielka and Quinn at bay to secure Reading a first away win of the season - and condemn United to a frustrating third defeat.

Nice, pulsating win.

"Steve Coppell"

"I had only just sat down and was looking around when Kevin Doyle got through and finished.
"A goal like that can fire up the opposition but we got hold off the game and created other opportunities.

"Sheffield gave us problems in the second half but we defended well to get the three points."

"Neil Warnock"

"We made too many mistakes. The first goal was a massive lift to them but it was a gift and a blow to us.
"They took their chances but it was an uphill task for us and for 30 minutes we didn't know where we where.

"We were a lot better in the second half and if we can eliminate silly mistakes we can give teams good games. I look forward to the battle ahead."

EPL Match 6 versus Manchester United

We played a United team without Giggs with an unchanged side.

Cristiano Ronaldo salvaged a point for Manchester United and denied Reading an historic win at the Madejski Stadium.
Ronaldo cut inside from the left to unleash a shot across Marcus Hahnemann to spare United's blushes.

Kevin Doyle earlier fired Reading ahead from the penalty spot after referee Peter Walton ruled Gary Neville handled Seol Ki-Hyeon's cross.

United had chances to steal the points, with Kieran Richardson missing his kick in front of goal.

Gabriel Heinze lined up for the first time in over a year in a Manchester United team that showed five changes from that beaten by Arsenal.

They almost snatched an early lead as Wayne Rooney's shot on the turn proved too hot for Hahnemann to hold and Graeme Murty just got to the loose ball ahead of the prowling Richardson.

By his own admission, Rooney is yet to find his touch this season and that was evident as Ronaldo's cute pass found him in space inside the box but the England striker's underhit shot proved little trouble for Hahneman.

Hahnemann continued to give the impression he wore non-stick gloves as he spilled Ronaldo's free-kick and Ivar Ingimarsson's clearance bailed him out.

In contrast, Van der Sar's handling was clean as a whistle as he went down to clutch Ki-Hyeon's powerful low drive with Leroy Lita lurking in vain for scraps.

United, though, always carried more menace and when Ronaldo got to the dead-ball line he fired across the face of goal with Paul Scholes just failing to make contact.

Reading, defending a 100% home record, worked like Trojans to deny United space on the flanks and the lack of width forced the visitors to try and pick their way through the middle where Reading always ensured there was congestion.

Reading went ahead soon after the restart in controversial circumstances. Referee Walton ruled Neville controlled Ki-Hyeon's cross with his upper arm, a decision replays suggested might have been harsh to say the least.

Van der Sar guessed right and got a hand to Doyle's penalty but was unable to keep it out as the Irish striker claimed his fourth goal of the season.

Reading were not content to sit on their lead and the mobility of Lita and Doyle along United's back line kept them stretched.

Richardson completely missed his kick in front of goal from Rooney's cross, and he was instantly replaced by Saha as Sir Alex Ferguson looked to give Rooney more support.

United needed something inspirational to crack Reading's resistance and they got it from Ronaldo who collected the ball wide on the left, weaved his way inside Murty and fired an angled shot across Hahnemann.

The goal changed the face of the game, and United poured forward in search of a winner, but Reading continued to defend heroically, and held out for a deserved point.

Brilliant point against a team that might win the league this season.

"Steve Coppell"

"I thought it was going to go our way, but there was a piece of individual skill and a great finish from Ronaldo.
"So we're half-pleased with the point given how the game went, thinking what might have been.

"I have to give my players a round of applause for their efforts."

"Sir Alex Ferguson"

"Reading, they fought for every ball and worked their tails off. But we should have done better.
"They put eight bodies in front of us in their box and that is not easy to play against.

"We had shots blocked, over the bar and the keeper made two or three good saves. Sometimes it happens that way."
