EPL Match 7 @ West Ham
Admittedly it's a bit late, but last Sunday we played West Ham at Upton Park. This game saw Tevez do very little and Maschareno stay on the bench. Murts wasn't quite fit enough so De la Cruz played at RB.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Seol Ki-Hyeon's brilliant early strike was enough to condemn West Ham to a fifth successive defeat.
The South Korean fired home from 25 yards with less than two minutes gone, to pile further misery on to Alan Pardew's out-of-form Hammers.
West Ham's Carlos Tevez, Jonathan Spector and Hayden Mullins all had long-range efforts saved.
And Steven Sidwell headed off the line in injury time after Yossi Benayoun's lob looked to be heading into the net.
The Hammers have now failed to score in their past five matches and Benayoun's late effort aside, they rarely seriously threatened the Reading goal.
Manager Pardew had spoken of the need for the team to bounce back quickly from their midweek Uefa Cup exit to Palermo.
But he must have despaired as the Hammers' sluggish start led to them conceding after only 78 seconds.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Seol picked up the ball from Bobby Convey's free-kick and was afforded time and space to pick his spot from distance.
It was a brilliant strike from the Korean but Pardew will be disappointed at how slow his team were to pick up on the danger.
The Hammers proceeded to dominate possession for the remainder of the half but did not look like breaking down Reading.
Carlos Tevez came as close as anyone with a low effort that bounced in a puddle in front of Marcus Hahnemann's goal - but the American held the ball.
Jonathan Spector also unleashed a long-range effort of his own, which Hahnemann gathered at the second attempt.
After the interval, Hayden Mullins saw a drive pushed away by Hahnemann but, in truth, Reading did not look like being opened up.
Two Tevez efforts midway through the second period summed up the Hammers - both flying high, wide and not particularly handsome.
Indeed, Tevez's contribution ended soon afterwards - along with that of Carlton Cole - as Pardew brought on Bobby Zamora and Teddy Sheringham to liven up his attack.
But although the change prompted Reading to increasingly sit back, still Steve Coppell's side looked comfortable.
Only Benayoun, who could barely believe it as Sidwell got back to head his goalbound lob over the bar and out for a corner, came close.
And for all of West Ham's effort, the Royals held on to take the three points that took them up to seventh in the Premiership.
Great first away win of the season, and proof that we don't need two great Argentines to win football matches.
- "Steve Coppell"
-
"As soon as we scored we almost had the mentality of holding on. We didn't play as well as I'd have liked. "They had lots of possession and when we got the ball we gave it away cheaply and that was a concern at half-time.
"The second half was scrappy but the qualities we do have, the way we work defensively meant it went our way."
- "Alan 'Judas' Pardew"
-
"Given the way that the media react to situations, of course this is going to come down on us. "We have to be bold and deal with it and we have the character in the dressing room to do that.
"I think the spirit in the squad came through. I think you could say that. We don't have factions in our team."

EPL Match 8 versus Chelsea
So this was the game which saw John Terry go in goal. Cech had to have surgery, and Cudicini has concussion or something. Hunt replaced Convey at short notice.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Chelsea substitute keeper Carlo Cudicini was stretchered off in a neck brace as the champions beat Reading. Cudicini, who replaced Petr Cech who was also stretchered off after 20 seconds, was left unconscious after a collision with Ibrahima Sonko.
Chelsea bagged the points after Frank Lampard's free-kick cannoned in off Reading defender Ivar Ingimarsson.
In a stormy second half Chelsea's Mikel Jon Obi and Reading substitute Andre Bikey were both sent off.
Chelsea suffered a blow after just 20 seconds when keeper Cech was caught on the head as he bravely plunged at Stephen Hunt's feet to save.
After a lengthy delay the Czech keeper was stretchered off and replaced by Cudicini.
The delay did not affect Reading who displayed an almost naïve lack of fear in carrying the game to Chelsea as they have to other Premiership opponents.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Reading had an escape 17 minutes in when Paulo Ferreira hared down the right and whipped in a cross which Ingimarsson headed against his own bar.
John Terry was harshly called for a foul on Kevin Doyle who folded like a card table under the England skipper's challenge but the Chelsea wall did its job as Nicky Shorey's free-kick deflected away for a corner.
Chelsea had a let-off when Hunt bullied and squirmed his way past defenders and into the danger zone where he squared the ball to Doyle who spun and cracked a shot against the inside of Cudicini's left-hand post.
Reading contributed to their own problems, with Hahnemann's mis-placed throw landing straight at the feet of Arjen Robben whose cross for Drogba allowed the American keeper to redeem himself with a sharp save at the foot of the post.
Reading's luck ran out, though, when they fell behind to an own goal.
Sonko's clumsy challenge on Lampard on the edge of the box earned him a booking and he was doubly punished as Lampard's free-kick pinged off him on the edge of the wall, and in pin-table fashion then ricocheted off Ingimarsson's boot into the net.
There was no lack of effort from Reading as they sought a route back into the game, but they needed to add wit and guile to their work to break Chelsea down.
But a moment of irresponsibility from Obi put his team under the cosh. Having been booked in the first half for clipping Lita from behind, he tugged Sonko back and was rightly shown a second yellow card to blot his full Premiership debut.
Chelsea showed why they relish situations where their backs are against the wall and Terry and Khalid Boulahrouz were towers of strength to keep Reading at distance.
Reading's hopes took a nose-dive when substitute Andre Bikey showed his inexperience by pulling back Drogba to earn a second yellow card and even the dismissal count.
But the drama continued until the final whistle when Cudicini was left unconscious in a goalmouth collision with Sonko.
The Italian needed oxygen and lengthy treatment before being put in a neck brace and being stretchered off, with John Terry taking over in goal.
Sad about Cech and Cudicini. Bikey. What a tosser. I really don't like him.
- "Steve Coppell"
-
"It's difficult to say if we deserved a point really. The goal was unlucky because it got deflected, but you live on the edge conceding free-kicks there to them. "Once they were down to 10 men in the second half we were in a good position but we couldn't get the goal and then we lost a player to a stupid red card.
"I couldn't ask for more but we must use our heads a bit better next time."
- "Jose Mourinho"
-
"To be angry doesn't help, I'll just wait for the keepers to leave hospital and to get a report on their injuries.
"I have to wait and see what the Football Association will do about it and I'm also waiting to hear what the experts think of both incidents.
"Carlo I think was knocked out as a consequence of the way he hit the ground, but a knee coming at Petr like that, at such speed - the boy was even laughing afterwards.
"It was unbelievable and players should respect each other more than that."

Jose's complaining about the standard of treatment and the lack of an ambulance for nearly 30 minutes and the fact that Hilario, his third choice who he signed in the summer will have to play tonight against Barca. Murts was injured which was why he was replaced by Andre 'I can't tackle fairly to save my life' Bikey. He's out for three weeks. Here's the full IL and how long each player will probably be out for.

Carling Cup 3rd Round @ Liverpool
In our latest Prem game we lost 4-0 to the Arsenal, but let's gloss over that and talk about our game last night in the Carling Cup against Liverpool. Both teams gave some reserves a run out, as is usual in the early rounds of cup competitions.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Liverpool survived a late Reading rally to secure their place in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. A Robbie Fowler dinked finish and John Arne Riise's powerful left-foot shot put Liverpool firmly in control on the stroke of half-time.
Gabriel Paletta glanced in his first goal for Liverpool just after the break before Andre Bikey headed one back.
Peter Crouch appeared to seal the win at 4-1 but Leroy Lita and Shane Long made it a thrilling finish at Anfield.
The late drama threatened to spoil a fine performance from Liverpool and in particular Fowler, their skipper for the evening.
He scored his first goal since the first day of the season in just his third appearance of the campaign.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Shortly before half-time he added to his impressive record in the League Cup, scoring his 21st goal in 23 appearances in the competition.
He ran on to a pass from Jermaine Pennant and produced the sort of finish seen so often by an adoring crowd of more than 42,000.
That came in the 44th minute but the Reds even had time to double their lead before the interval when Riise lashed in at the second attempt after Stack had kept out his first effort.
The Reds appeared to have the tie settled five minutes into the second period when Pennant's corner from the left found Paletta, who glanced a header into the far corner.
Fowler had chances to add to the scoreline before Bikey headed powerfully in from Glen Little's free-kick.
But their hopes of mounting a serious threat seemed to end three minutes later when Fowler set up strike partner Crouch, who bamboozled Stack with some dazzling footwork to walk in the fourth.
For the second time in four days following Sunday's defeat to Arsenal the Royals had conceded four, but to their credit they battled on and John Halls set up Lita to sidefoot home.
With time running out it looked little more than a consolation until Little and Long combined to make it 4-3 in the 84th minute.
Dirk Kuyt volleyed against the bar and then Fowler was twice denied by the woodwork as they searched for a fifth Liverpool goal, but their defence also survived some nervy goalmouth scrambles to go through to the next stage.
That's alright. The pressure wasn't on us to win like it was on Liverpool, and we played well and almost nicked a win.
- "Reading Assistant Manager Kevin Dillon"
-
"We had a couple of chances to get back in it and we could have snatched a draw at the end, but I was quite pleased we didn't. "We've got a big game on Saturday and a long trip back and I'm sure Mr Benitez was thinking the same about extra-time.
"So I was pleased with the performance but not with the result.
"We went 3-0 down but kept playing and kept passing, Glen Little was creating problems and our set-pieces caused them problems."
- "Rafa Benitez"
-
"It was a very good finish. I have seen him in training every day and he is very good. Only people with his quality can do this. "It was a fantastic game for the people, it is normally not for manager but for supporters.
"We need to control the game and keep the ball. At the end we could have scored and they could have scored."

EPL Match 10 @ Portsmouth
Our latest game was on Saturday against a Portsmouth team that are looking really good this year.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Portsmouth continued their impressive start to the season with an easy victory over Reading at Fratton Park.
A first-half own goal by Brynjar Gunnarsson after 10 minutes from an in-swinging corner from Pedro Mendes set Pompey on their way.
Nwankwo Kanu headed in a second for the home side after the half-time break.
Mendes volleyed a third from the edge of the box, with Reading's solitary response a stabbed finish from Kevin Doyle with six minutes to go.
It was Reading's fourth consecutive loss, and boss Steve Coppell will not be encouraged by a defence who looked nervous throughout.
The Royals have now conceded 12 goals in four games.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Both teams were looking to bounce back from midweek Carling Cup defeats and it was the hosts who dominated from the first whistle.
Kanu was at the heart of all the Pompey vigour and after eight minutes he should have done better with a glancing header but could only find the hands of Marcus Hahnemann.
It was not long before the Reading defence crumbled and it was the Nigerian causing a nuisance once again.
His strength and persistence at the near post after a Mendes corner led to Gunnarsson bundling into his own net from two yards.
It was not the perfect start for the Icelander's full Premiership debut.
Pompey missed several good chances in the first half, with Benjani Mwaruwari guilty of missing the ball completely on the six yard line.
The interval failed to improve the Reading confidence and Kanu doubled the lead on 52 minutes with a header after a clever volleyed pass from Sol Campbell.
Mendes' inventive magic became more influential as the game progressed and it was no surprise to see him drive home a fine skimming volley on 66 minutes.
Reading finally woke up in the final 10 minutes with Doyle sliding the ball in after a goalmouth scramble following a wild flap from David James.
Again, we were beaten by a Gunnarsson own goal. 3-1 was a kind result though against a team that flattenned us.
- "Steve Coppell"
-
"We were up against a strong outfit, well-marshalled at the back, a keeper playing at the top of his game and a powerful, competitive midfield. "And there was Kanu's finishing. We got back into it then but it was too late.
"If we keep putting our best side out I can guarantee we will be all right. Pompey will definitely be looking up this season rather than down."
- "Harry Redknapp"
-
"He has been fantastic. Seven goals already is amazing. And he could easily have been given our first one today as well. "He keeps on heading the ball in and before I brought him here I didn't think he could head it at all.
"We decided to go at them from the first whistle and it paid off with some great football."
Scorers
1-0 Gunnarsson (og) - Portsmouth (10) 2-0 Kanu - Portsmouth (52) 3-0 Mendes - Portsmouth (66) 3-1 Doyle - Reading (84)

EPL Match 12 versus Tottenham
I know I haven't updated for a while. We were beaten again by Liverpool. However, on Sunday we played Spurs.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Reading came from behind to secure a morale-boosting Premiership victory.
Tottenham took a deserved first-half lead with a Robbie Keane penalty after Ibrahima Sonko fouled Hossam Ghaly.
But Spurs were rocked by two goals at the end of the half as Paul Robinson was beaten by Nicky Shorey's shot and Steve Sidwell's close-range finish.
In the game's closing stages, Kevin Doyle applied the coup de grace with an angled shot before Jermain Defoe hit the woodwork with a powerful effort.
This was a victory that led to perspiration proving to be mightier than panache.
Despite having lost their previous four Premiership games, Reading showed wonderful character to beat a side that for the opening 38 minutes of this match had completely outplayed them.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Sidwell typified Reading's grit, making important defensive interceptions as well as popping up to score the home side's second goal.
But Spurs, who last Sunday beat champions Chelsea, must be wondering how they managed to suffer such a heavy defeat after dominating most of the opening half.
Martin Jol's side initially attacked with plenty of verve and their adventure was rewarded as they took the lead through a penalty after Ghaly was brought down by Sonko.
Keane took the penalty, sidefooting the ball into the corner of the net as Marcus Hahnemann dived the wrong way.
Having failed to get a shot on target in the opening 38 minutes, Reading equalised as Shorey rectified that statistic in spectacular fashion, swerving a left-footed shot past Robinson.
And in the final minute of the half Reading went ahead, courtesy of some shambolic Spurs marking from a corner.
Sidwell took full advantage, getting ahead of Didier Zokora to prod home Glen Little's corner.
After the restart, Spurs struggled to reassert their earlier authority, prompting a grim-faced Jol to bring on Tom Huddlestone and Defoe.
With 12 minutes left, Defoe was able to find the space to get a shot on target after an intelligent run but he sent his effort into the side-netting.
Almost immediately Reading counter-attacked and Doyle beat Robinson with a left-footed shot.
Spurs' misery was further compounded when Defoe rattled the post after he turned quickly to shoot.
The win ensured Reading snatched 11th place from Spurs to leave last season's Championship winners on 16 points.
A real capitulation from Spurs, handing us a 3-1 win.
- "Steve Coppell"
-
"It's all about where we finish at the end, that's the be-all and end-all of our season. "I don't want the highlight of our year to be September, October, November.
"The bottom line remains that if we retain our status in this division, it will be a far better achievement than gaining promotion last season."
- "Martin Jol"
-
"At half-time we wanted to put it right but you need personality and character. "It's frustrating, you get a bit angry as well because you can do all the hard work and prepare yourself well.
"All credit to them because, apart from Arsenal, not many teams have won here but if you make those sort of mistakes you can't win any game."
Scorers
0-1 Keane (pen) - Tottenham (24) 1-1 Shorey - Reading (38) 2-1 Sidwell - Reading (45) 3-1 Doyle - Reading (79)
We could've had a few more.
Reading Substitutions

Our next game is on Saturday, we are at home to Charlton. In other news, Gunnarsson and Ingimarsson have extended their contracts and Curtis Osano is to extend his work experience loan at Aldershot.

EPL Match 13 versus Charlton
I know it's a bit late. Meh. Last Saturday we played Charlton at home.

- "BBC Sport"
-
New Charlton boss Les Reed was given an indication of the size of the task facing him as his basement side tamely went down to defeat at Reading. The home side took the lead when Stephen Hunt's clever backheel allowed Nicky Shorey to cross for Seol Ki-Hyeon to head home from six yards.
Charlton rarely threatened as Reading missed several gilt-edged chances.
But Kevin Doyle wrapped up a Royals win when a Steve Sidwell mis-kick let him in to touch in a shot.
The new-manager syndrome can sometimes reinvigorate a team but Reed's appointment showed little impact in lifting a beleaguered Charlton.
The Addicks were lethargic and, despite having two early chances against the run of play, they were fortunate to go into half-time only one goal down.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Charlton striker Marcus Bent's glancing header was saved after eight minutes before Talal El-Karkhouri shot straight at Reading keeper Marcus Hahnemann shortly afterwards.
But that was as good as it got for the visitors as they were constantly upstaged by a Reading side who were clearly showed more enthusiasm and zip in their play.
The home side's first opening saw winger Hunt, who could easily have tumbled over for a penalty, put through on goal only for the chance to go begging after an El-Karkhouri sliding tackle.
Reading did not have long to wait before their play was rewarded with a goal when Seol nodded in from six yards.
Glen Little should have added a second but he sidefooted a volley wide after finding space all too easily at the far post to meet Doyle's cross.
Doyle was then clean through but his failure to control the ball saw him squander away the opportunity before an unmarked Hunt headed another chance comfortably high.
The second half started in the same manner as confusion in the Charlton six-yard area almost let Reading in only for the visitors to desperately clear the danger.
A tame Dennis Rommedahl curler at the other end gave Hahnemann some rare work to do but Charlton failed to engineer any serious assault on goal.
And Doyle pounced to add Reading's second when Sidwell's mistimed shot gave him just keeper Scott Carson to beat.
The ninth defeat of the season for Charlton could have been worse but referee Graham Poll did not award Hunt a spot-kick when he seemed to be clearly fouled by El-Karkhouri.
A great, comprehensive, 2-0 win.
Scorers
1-0 Seol - Reading (18) 2-0 Doyle - Reading (72)

EPL Match 14 @ Fulham
Another late update, but it doesn't matter. Last Saturday we played Fulham away.

- "BBC Sport"
-
Kevin Doyle's first-half penalty earned Reading a third straight Premiership victory as they held off 10-man Fulham.
Ian Pearce was sent off for a 17th minute foul on Doyle, who got up to slot home his third goal in as many matches with a sweet spot-kick.
Fulham came back into it after the break with Claus Jensen's strike well stopped by Marcus Hahnemann and Collins John heading over from close range.
But the Royals held on to continue their impressive winning sequence.

- "BBC Sport"
-
The game started at a lively pace with both sides tentatively prodding at each other's defences.
But Fulham boss Chris Coleman was soon showing his frustrations on the sidelines as Reading took the upper hand and crafted out the best early chances.
Liam Rosenior was forced to clear his lines in acrobatic style for the home side after just five minutes before the visitors finally made their pressure tell.
Glen Little guided the ball over the top for James Harper to chase down the right and his low cross was timed to perfection for Doyle to chase.
Pearce stretched out a leg but only succeeded in bringing down the livewire striker for which he was duly sent off by referee Dermot Gallagher.
And Doyle then sent Antti Niemi the wrong way from the spot for his third strike in as many Premiership games.
Brian McBride had Fulham's best chance to respond when he met a curling cross from Rosenior, but he was denied by an excellent parry by fellow USA international Hahnemann.
Reading nearly went two ahead when Fulham's Zat Knight flicked the ball over his own crossbar from Graham Murty's cross but they were also given plenty to think about with injuries to two influential players.
First, midfielder Steve Sidwell was forced off after 33 minutes after failing to shake off an earlier injury, to be replaced by Icelandic international Brynjar Gunnarsson.
Then John Oster had to be thrown on by Royals boss Steve Coppell three minutes later when the hard-working Little limped off.
The injury problems then affected Fulham as Franck Queudrue also hobbled off 10 minutes later, to be replaced by Carlos Bocanegra, forming the hosts' third defensive partnership of the afternoon.
But the home side rallied as half-time approached with John wriggling his way to within sight of goal only to be denied by Ivar Ingarmarsson's timely interception.
Manager Coleman sent his side out early for the second half, hoping to inject some much-needed passion.
And it seemed to pay dividends as Jensen immediately tested Niemi from 18 yards.
Tomasz Radzinski and McBride also had good chances to redress the balance for the Cottagers, who had failed to score in just one of their previous seven Premiership matches.
But as the hosts pressed forward they became exposed at the back and nearly conceded again when Ki-Hyeon Seol's cross was knocked over the bar by Oster from six yards.
Coleman went for broke as heavy rain lashed down over Craven Cottage, throwing on substitutes Wayne Routledge and Papa Boupa Diop for Radsinski and the ineffective Michael Brown.
And McBride nearly netted a spectacular equaliser with a rasping 25-yard drive which drifted just wide.
Doyle was denied a second with just minutes to go by the feet of Niemi and it was Reading who finished the stronger as Fulham slumped to their third home defeat of the season.
Useful win that is. Keeps up our push for Europe.

In other news, Glen Little, Marcus Hahnemann and Graeme Murty have all signed extensions to their contracts. Our next game is a tricky one, at home to Bolton on Saturday.

EPL Match 15 versus Bolton
So we faced the donkeys on Saturday, knowing that a win would be awesome.

Reading earned their fourth successive win in the Premiership as Kevin Doyle's goal was enough to see off Bolton.
Doyle struck in the first half, rising high at the back post to head into the far corner after lovely wing play down the right from John Oster.
Reading were good value and Oster blazed over before Leroy Lita forced a fine late save from Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Kevin Nolan dragged a shot off target and Abdoulaye Faye headed wide from two yards as Bolton slipped to defeat.
It was exactly what Reading deserved for a display full of spirit and determination, just the qualities needed to beat a physical Bolton side.

The Royals quickly showed their visitors how well they have adapted to life in the Premiership as James Harper latched on to a Doyle knock-back and flashed a shot wide from 25 yards.
Reading were on top for much of the early stages, but Bolton gave them little space to work in and began to frustrate their opponents by cutting off the supply to Doyle and Seol Ki-Hyeon.
It was very much classic Bolton: stop the opposition playing and barrage them with long throw-ins and high balls pumped up to Kevin Davies, with Nolan and Gary Speed looking to pick up the second ball.
But Reading were not deterred and kept playing their normal passing game, probing and pushing for an opening.
Not long after the half-hour mark, they were rewarded for their perseverance and patience.
Oster skipped inside Stelios and clipped a lovely ball to the far post where Doyle rose high to nod cleverly back across goal and into the corner.
Bolton were out well before Reading for the start of the second half, clearly with some stern words from boss Sam Allardyce ringing in their ears after a passionless first 45 minutes.
But they failed to significantly improve and should have been 2-0 down almost immediately, Oster blazing hopelessly over from six yards after fine work from Stephen Hunt down the left.
Nolan - with his hand in plaster due to a dislocated finger - was trying to haul Bolton back into it and he dragged wide from eight yards, before being booked for a clumsy tackle on the impressive Steve Sidwell.
Allardyce had seen enough and on the hour he hauled off Speed - on his 499th Premiership appearance - and Diouf and brought on Ricardo Vaz Te and Ivan Campo.
Nolan flashed a header straight at Marcus Hahnemann, but even the expected aerial bombardment from Bolton failed to materialise and it was Reading who looked more likely to get a second.
Sidwell found himself in space 20 yards out only to lash over the crossbar, before substitute Lita cut in from the left and saw his low drive well-saved by Jaaskelainen.
Reading, in their first season in top-flight football, are sixth, outside a Champions League berth by virtue of only goal difference.
A brilliant 1-0 win. Need I say any more?

For the first time in ages we've got a midweek game, away to Newcastle. We've also drawn Burnley in the FA Cup 3rd round, which will be a tricky game.
