MELBOURNE VICTORY 6-0 ADELAIDE UNITED Hyundai A-League Grand Final It was an amazing game in Melbourne today as the aptly named Victory put on a wonderful performance to claim a well-deserved league title. No-one had ever scored more than 5 goals in a match in the A-League before this Grand Final. It was also a record scoreline for any Australian football final. Archie Thompson scored the first 5 goals, before (somewhat ironically) his substitute Kristian Sarkies finished it off with the best of the lot in injury time. Brazilian Fred has 4 assists. The game was somewhat ruined when Melbourne were 2-0 up, as Adelaide had their captain Ross Aloisi (brother of John) sent off in the first half. An Australian domestic record crowd of 55000+ watched the match. Melbourne, who took the Minor-Premiership by a massive 12 points, capped off a remarkable turnaround, as they finished 7th out of 8 last season. Archie Thompson was named the player of the Grand Final. Interesting fact: he also holds the record for most goals in an international match, 13 vs American Samoa (31-0 in total). And in case you were wondering, he had a stint with PSV at the end of last season, and was really quite bad, making only a couple of substitute appearances. |

I think Archie Thompson could do well in the Premiership with a middle-ish team - like Blackburn
