Hey, I'm starting my cricket diary, just to give ye all an insight into my cricket and how it is in Ireland.

I'll be playing for Harlequins this season and will be starting my first training session tonight, wish me luck!

Good luck man. Hope everything goes well. I'd imagine it must be difficult to have cricket played in Ireland as you have the worst weather imaginable over there. It's bad enough here, especially with some umpires who have been known to take teams off when there have been a few minor spots of rain.

First training session

Went really well, first we went into a warm up and then we did some fielding practice which was excellent. I dropped one though, I was expecting it short, got off the mark and then had to try and catch the ball over my head as I was running backwards, you can imagine I didn't succeed.

We than went into the nets for a bit with the soft balls. I was umpire :P but I bowled a few good balls. Then went into bat, tried to block but ended up just slogging for the laugh. We than had a match and I got to bowl, bowled well, on line (I even got the ball to swing away from the right hander!) but couldn't take a wicket. We only got to finish the first innings before we went, but I did well and really enjoyed it!

Second Training Session

Was excellent, started off badly when I went in to bat and this pakistani prick Asfan (Who tried to beat me up a couple of weeks ago) kept bowling beamers at me and at one stage i just stood out of the way every time he bowled. Improved greatly after that, went in the net and bowled well, did fielding practice as well and took nearly every catch.

It was pissing raining the whole session and by the time the game satarted it was a downpour. We started and went in to bat first. our captain Sinéad (Who I insisted in calling Chief the whole evening :P. She did call me G so we were even) went in with the main wicky Eric and he was out 3 balls later after spooning a catch.

I was batting in the nets while it was going on and when I came in I was against the worst bowler. First ball I pulled off my waist for four, then after two wides and a no-ball (It rolled along the ground) I hit a on drive that went for a four as well and I finished with a square cut for four.

Our innings finished when I had to retire and I went into bowl. We were playing on the outfield and I kept bowling straight (Becauase the batsman wasn't very good :P) but the ball bounced off the pitch and went away from the batsman. My last ball came off straight but hit him on the hips. We kept appealing for stuff and when that happened the umpire (My coach) said

"I don't think Ass Before Wicket is going to be given in the next century"

So excellent, and Asfan got out for a duck after being run out! :point:

No, there isn't much youth cricket in Ireland. But we hope to play a couple of matches this season

Third Training Session

Best training session so far, I was in a group with different people and got on really well, there were three girls there and they were the funniest people that I've come across in a while. Went into the nets and I was told I had to bat first.

I was ruing the chance to go in but I actually found it okay, played some excellent shots and by the end I was hitting the sweet sport with every ball :P.

I came out and had a bowl, I was in good nick (Was practicing all week) and felt good.

The game came and we were fielding, I missed a catch (Which seriously hurt my fingers) but I took a catch which was good. But my bowling was awful and it was a real eye opener to me. I was bowling well in the nets with the hard ball but when it came to the swinging plastic ball I just couldn't control it at all.

Ended in the best possible fashion, I scored the winning runs and slid to the ground and everybody jumped on me :P

Lets hope for more of the same next week

The trick with the IncrediBalls, as they're called, is to hold them in your normal grip with the seam horizontally. That nullifies any swing or movement off the seam and makes them easy to control.

Thanks to both comments and I'll try to use the grip across the ball next time. Thanks for the tip Tealy!

Fourth Training Session

Started out with us mucking about in the nets with the Incrediballs, I bowled cross seam (Like Tealey suggested) and I was bowling well with them so thanks Tealey!

Went well, just did some fielding (Dropped one catch because I was running backwards, mistimed the jump and I was on the down as the ball passed my fingertips) throwing was good before we went into the middle. Unfortunately I was paired with this guy who is quite slow in the head and we ended up being -7 after 2 overs because he never swung the bat and didn't understand the meaning of running two.

Went in to bowl and tried to throw the cover off the ball and bowled two bad deliveries. But I realized what i was doing and then settled into a rhythm, I had one ball just missing the stumps by a kittens whisker.

So good start and the coach said we'd have some games coming up, one of my 4rnds got the call up for the 2nd XI over the weekend because they were short, I was asked but I couldn't make it, so hopefully there will be more opportunities
