Valerenga was mentioned on uefa.com:

Quote:

Injury-hit Vålerenga Fotball will have to draw on all their famed resourcefulness as they battle to maintain their Eliteserien status, a run of seven successive league defeats leading to the resignation of coach Tor Ole Skullerud.

Storm clouds gather
Football can be a fickle sport. On 24 June a 2-1 victory over FK Bodø/Glimt took Vålerenga up to fourth in Norway and the outlook appeared rosy: a top-three finish was a real possibility. Storm clouds have gathered over the Ullevaal Stadion ever since, however, the high hopes of the Oslo club's supporters, the Klanen, washed away by a sorry run of seven league defeats. A 3-0 loss at second-from-bottom Strømsgodset IF sums it up, and even their 1-0 win at PAOK FC in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round proved in vain, the 2-1 first-leg reverse meaning elimination on the away-goals rule.

Skullerud fatigue

Now the sole focus for Norwegian Cup holders Vålerenga is avoiding relegation – they may have to fight tooth and nail to do so. Adding to the mix, they must do it without Skullerud who, citing fatigue, stepped down this week. "It will take a massive effort to turn things around, and I feel I haven't got any more to give," he explained. "I hope Vålerenga survive, the fans deserve it." Just three points separate them from the drop zone, however, and player-manager Martin Andresen is only too aware that this is a "difficult period". "I hope we will see a change when key players return from injury," he added.

Defensive headache
Andresen is himself sidelined, as are defenders Freddy dos Santos and Erik Hagen, and Saturday's match against title chasing Molde FK is perhaps the last thing Vålerenga need. The travails of other clubs flirting with relegation provides some consolation, with FC Lyn Oslo rooted to the foot of the table, six points from safety with eight games remaining. Third-from-bottom Fredrikstad FK have also had their problems after coach Anders Grönhagen went on sick leave. After reaching an agreement with Grönhagen, Tom Nordlie – who lists Vålerenga among the 13 sides he has coached – has been installed at the helm. "This is a great challenge," he said on his appointment. There are a few of those in Norway this season.

1.Rosenborg...........................................51 points

New Unbeaten record?
That's basically the only question left of Rosenborg's 2009 campaign. With nine games left for Rosenborg and seven for Molde, as well as a seven points lead, Rosenborg will easly win their 21st league title unless they suffer with a massive collapse in the end. 2009 Has been a party from the first kick for Rosenborg and they have won a lot of games that they have lost the past years. A lot of teams have taken the lead against the leaders, but they have always made comebacks and with nine games left they are still unbeaten. There are some major challenges in the last rounds, including Viking, Brann, Stabæk and Molde away so it's still not over!

2.Molde.....................................................44 points
Posted Image
Senegalese fun in Molde
Molde is back after a few seasons in the grey zone. The side that kept challenging big brother Rosenborg in their golden era in the 1990's is back after the relegation in 2006. And three Senegalese players are the heroes in Molde. The biggest of them, Mame Biram Diouf is sold to Manchester United even though he is allowed to stay for the rest of the season. That is worth a lot for Molde, because Mame has been a beast and he just can't stop scoring. His highlight was the homegame against Brann in July where he scored after 23 seconds, completed a hat-trick within nine minutes and then added a fourth as well. Pape Pate Diouf has been decent too and the man you can see Mahktar Thioune is currently the best player in the league if you see the point table of the biggest newspaper in Norway, VG.

Molde's defeat against Vålerenga yesterday has put them so far behind that they shouldn't be able to challenge RBK anymore, but Molde has been Norway's greatest side for a period this season. In games where Rosenborg have struggled and won 2-1, Molde has won by great margins and been totally outstanding. However, they have dropped points against lower sides too.

Other than protecting the silver in the league, Molde has a golden chance to qualify for the cup final this season after the stunning 5-0 victory against main rivals Rosenborg in the last 8. A win against Vålerenga at home will send Molde to the final at Ullevaal in November, a final they went on to win back in 2005. The opponents might be Aalesund, the other rivals of Molde FK. What a final that would be! But first they have to revenge the defeat against Vålerenga from yesterday.

Can Molde go to the final and give Rosenborg more challenge? And what about the derby later this autumn: Can they stop Rosenborg's unbeaten record if it's still going on?

3.Odd Grenland.................................................39 points

From promotion to medals?

Odd Grenland has without doubts been the biggest shock of the season going from Adeccoligaen to batteling for medals. The monster Peter Kovacs (in the middle of the picture) from Hungary is Odd's secret weapon and he has been the main reason why the team from Skien keeps doing so well - especially at home. The white and black team have only one defeat at home so far so Skagerak Arena has been a hard away ground to come to. But can they complete the race and secure the 3rd place? There are some big sides coming from behind so it will be hard, no doubt... Odd has still a chance to play the cup final as well and they beat their opponents Aalesund earlier so they are the favourites!

4.Stabæk................................................35 points
Posted Image

A new era for Stabæk
In spite of falling behind in their defending champion season, Stabæk can't really complain. Stabæk is the miracle side in Norwegian football:

The year was 1990 and Stabæk is a small, unknown side from Bærum - a place with a lot of rich people just outside Oslo. Stabæk was playing in 4th division, or level 5 if you want. Luckly though, they had a rich fan called Ingebrigt Steen Jensen and Mr.Stabæk himself has a great personality. With him 'in charge', the very first Tippeligaen game was not far away. 1995, five years later, Stabæk walked on the pitch at Nadderud to play Oslo's pride Vålerenga IF. Vålerenga won 2-0, which was the first out of many classic derbies between those two.
1998 is a new good season for Stabæk and the blue fans could celebrate their first ever title after beating Rosenborg 3-1 after extra time in the cup final. That progresced a European Season in 1999 and Stabæk actually managed to beat Deportivo La Coruña! Three years later they almost eliminated Anderlecht in the UEFA-cup too, but the Belgians beat Stabæk on the away goal rule.
Many feared that the adventure was over in 2004 after nine years in the top league when Vålerenga sent Stabæk down in the last round, like Stabæk sent Vålerenga down in 1996. Stabæk's time in the next highest league was not long and they returned as quickly as possible. And now they had a top scorer on their team too: His name was Daniel Nannskog, a Swedish striker bought from China! Him, Veigar Pall Gunnarson, Alanzinho and keeper Jon Knudsen developed in the league and went from silver in 2007 to a great title season in 2008. Little Stabæk had won the league, 18 years after playing in one of the most lower leagues in Norway! The fact is just unbelievable:

The first ever game at Nadderud was played against Vålerenga, who won 2-0.
The last ever game at Nadderud was played against Vålerenga and Stabæk won 6-2. That was the game that made Stabæk win the league.
Two weeks later they met each other in the cupfinal, a match Vålerenga won 4-1!
Stabæk sent VIF down in 1996
VIF sent Stabæk down in 2004
The first ever match at Stabæk's new homeground Telenor Arena was the Community Shield game against Vålerenga. I was there and Stabæk won 3-1.

Stabæk's history is so young, but so rich. After selling Alanzinho and Pall Gunnarson a head of this season, the shoes have been too big to fill for Daigo Kobayashi and Espen Hoff. However, they should be able to finish top 3 so don't doubt it: Stabæk is still a top team in Norway.

PS: Stabæk is eliminated from Europe after losing to FC København (1-3) in the CL and Valencia (1-7) in the EL.

5.Brann....................................................................33 points
Posted Image

Erik Huseklepp
Yeah, just remember the name. He has been awesome this season and the 24 year old's break through has made clubs like Sevilla and Ajax follow him. 9 Goals and 11 assists speaks for itself, even in a bad season for SK Brann. Brann, who still can grab the bronze in the league and that is obviously the goal for the team from the 2nd biggest city in Norway. Where are they going and where is Huseklepp going?

6.Start...................................................................32 points
Posted Image

Mads Stokkelien - a man for the future?
The youngster has scored many good goals so far and he has one of the most impressive statistics in spite of a young age. He is one of the reasons why IK Start is so high on the table in spite of being a promoted side from last season. We will see if they will climb or fall when the last points are sumed up, but no doubt it looks good for Start, who has the biggest loss of the season so far: 1-8 in Molde did not look good for Start, who has the former Rosenborg manager Knut Tørum in charge. Tørum, who beat Valencia 2-0 in his last game in charge in Trondheim. Weird.

7.Viking.................................................................30 points
Posted Image

Uwe on the way out?
That's the only question left of Viking's very dissapointing season. This was supposed to be the season where the vikings returned to the top of Norwegian football, but the team without titles since 2001 is still in the shadows of the others. That's not good enough in Stavanger and Uwe Rösler knows it.

8.Sandefjord..........................................................28 points
Posted Image

Sandefjord - saved the spot already?
They promoted as the third best team from 1st division last season and the goal of this season was pretty clear: Save the spot. Six points over the play-off with eight rounds left is a good starting-point before the last games. Can they make it as the third promoted team who currently are top eight?

9.Vålerenga.........................................................28 points
Posted Image

For how long will Andresen be in Vålerenga?
Many fans thought Martin Andresen, playing manager and captain in Vålerenga, was singing on the last chore when Vålerenga lost their sixth match in row last week, but his assistant Skullerud was fired instead. There's no doubt that Andresen, former national team captain is a questionable leader for one of Norway's biggest clubs. Is Vålerenga the pride of Oslo and have Oslo something to be proud of at all? Vålerenga can still take the cup trophy home though and save the season like last year, but... 9th place is very far down compared to Vålerenga's ambitions.

10.Tromsø.............................................................26 points
Posted Image

Tromsø - a fight for money
Tromsø is no doubt one of the unluckiest sides in Norway. Last year's impressive 3rd place is now copied to a 10th place and a fight against relegation. They recently got knocked out of Europa League after 3-4 against Athletic Bilbao. A good management by Tromsø, who got very unlucky too. The Spanish side got two penalties they shouldn't have had and TIL's keeper was sent off for nothing. I guess we have to accept that smaller sides are chanceless in Europe when referees keeps licking the big club's asses, eh. TIL were knocked out of the cup a month ago too, in the last 8. They were 3-1 up though, but got a player sent off and Vålerenga turned it into a 4-3 win - six minutes into the overtime after an own goal.

In spite of all this, the biggest fight is still to produce money for this poor club. The most northern side in Tippeligaen are struggling to get enough of money to survive and they have to sell keyplayers. However, they still manage to well in Europe and get points in the league. Tromsø is a club with players who's playing for the club and for the team crest - not for the money. Hallelujah Tromsø, for taking care of the soul of football. But is soul and fight enough?

11.Lillestrøm.............................................26 points
Posted Image

Lillestrøm saving the spot again?
They have been in the top league since 1975 - the 30th biggest town in Norway with 30.000 innhabitans. Of all teams in the league they have survivest for the longest time. And they will do it again if this form continues. Maybe the Kanarifans can celebrate again after the last kick of the season?

LSK have bigger ambitions than this, though, and the fans expected more a head of the season. But when it turned out to be like this, the fans will be happy if the team still are a part of Tippeligaen in 2010 too.

12.Aalesund.............................................23 points
Posted Image

Nervousity in Ålesund
2009 Has been another fight against relegation for the orange team from the jungle town Ålesund. One of the best players in Norway's great era in the 90's Kjetil Rekdal is the man who's going to make Aalesund saving the spot again, for the third year in a row. It's certainly not an easy task, but he is expected to do it. 13th is the last safe spot in this league so the fight has begun. Can they grab enough points?

13.Bodø/Glimt..........................................23 points
Posted Image

Relegation battle for Bodø/Glimt
Bodø/Glimt is, in simularity with Tromsø, a team from the north of Norway and a team with financial trouble. The Norwegian FA means that they have to upgrade their stadium as well so it's tough times in Bodø. Luckly they have legends like Runar Berg who is playing all his games for free. He is playing for the club and not for the money. Respect, Runar Berg.

14.Fredrikstad...........................................22 points
Posted Image

From silver to relegation?
The current holder of the play-off spot is one of the most winning sides of Norwegian football. This club has many titles from the 1950's and 1960's and they have beaten sides like Ajax in the same period. Therefore, many celebrated when FFK promoted back to the top league in 2003 after 20 years in lower leagues. Since then, the arrows have pointed FFK's way, but this season has not been a walk in the park.

2002 - FFK promotes from 2nd division after scoring 99 goals on 26 games.
2003 - FFK promotes to Tippeligaen.
2004 - FFK saves the spot.
2005 - FFK saves the spot again.
2006 - FFK saves the spot, wins the cup in the last season at their old stadium.
2007 - FFK is back in Europe and wins a lot of homegames at their new stadium.
2008 - FFK takes the silver.
2009 - Relegation?

15.Strømsgodset.......................................20 points
Posted Image

Same old story?
They have one of the oldest squads in the league, but routine is not enough at this level. Or is it?

16.Lyn..............................................................16 points
Posted Image

Lyn against the odds
No money. No fans. No keyplayers. The FA are willing to move them down to 2nd division. Are the ages of miracles gone or is Lyn relegated already?

Great read that B)

I never knew Thioune was the best player in the league at the moment :eek2: That's crazy :notworthy: It's surprising to see Odd so far up in the table too!

Gotta cross your fingers for Valerenga eh.

How do you think Molde will do without Mame Biram Diouf next season? Also, is the Norwegian FA forcing Bodø/Glimt to upgrade their stadium? :eek2:

WOAH! Mame Niang was boo-ed on by his own fans when he entered the pitch tonight! I know he was an ass when he hit a player on a training, but you don't boo out your own players when they come on for a substitute.
