This is too big to go in the General Sport Discussion thread, so lets hope this thread is better than the old The Cricket Thread  I think it will be, seeing as we have the Ashes this summer.

OK, cricket is back in England! The friendlies are over (they didn't have many to be honest :neulol: ) and the season has officially started today with the MCC taking on defending county champions Durham at Lord's. I even got my season ticket for Hampshire today :neushades:

This season sees the LV County Championship (4-day matches competition) and Friends Provident Trophy (50 over competition) as usual, as well as the Twenty20 Cup and the Pro40 league (40 over league) - the latter coming to an end this season, to be replaced by a Twenty20 League called the English Premier League, I believe. Internationally, England take on the West Indies, after just coming from there, and also the big one - the Ashes contest between England and Australia. We all remember 2005, eh Hugh  (Don't bring up the 2006-07 one :| ). There are other tours going on as well, but also we have the ICC Twenty20 World Cup here in England! Keep an eye on the World Cup (50 over Cup, the proper World Cup) qualifiers too - come on Afghanistan!

OK, the first bit of news is from the ICC World Cup qualifiers.

ICC

Afghanistan’s dream of World Cup glory stays alive… but only just

They will join Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Namibia, Netherlands, Kenya and UAE in Super Eight

Live ball-by-ball scoring from all matches throughout the 19-day tournament is offered on the event website; free-to-use photos available from Ireland v Namibia while Getty Images attended the Kenya v Denmark and Netherlands v Bermuda games; video clips available on event website

The make-up of the Super Eight stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier was finalised today with Afghanistan continuing its incredible journey towards possible participation in the 2011 World Cup.

It will, however, be very difficult for Norooz Mangal and his team to secure one of the four remaining spots at the event because the two matches it has won in this event so far have been against sides that didn’t make the last eight and so, as a result, they will not carry forward any points to the Super Eight stage.

As such, Afghanistan lies in seventh position, just ahead of Namibia on net run-rate, with four rounds of matches to go. But the words “impossible” or even “unlikely” do not seem to be in the Afghans’ vocabulary as, in the space of less than a year, they have managed to win through from Division 5 of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League all the way up to the last eight of the top Associate and Affiliate teams in the world.

“This is a great achievement for us,” said Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan.

“We came from Division 5 and now we have left behind us one team that played in the last World Cup (Bermuda) and two sides that were in Division 2 (Denmark and Oman) as well as Uganda which qualified with us from Division 3 so we are delighted with the progress we are making. It’s a great moment.

“Our first target was to get in the top eight. Now we have set our sights on the top six because that will bring ODI status for four years. My team is getting used to this now. We have learned lessons from mistakes we made against the other teams, especially the better sides like Kenya and the Netherlands and we will carry that experience into the Super Eight.

“Qualifying for the World Cup will be very difficult as we will have to win all four games probably but that dream is deep inside me. Anything can happen and we have not given up hope. We don’t know how to give up hope,” he said.

Afghanistan will be joined by defending champion Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Namibia, Netherlands, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates with matches in that stage of the event getting under way on Saturday.

Afghanistan went from Division 5 to this top group of qualifiers, amazing :notworthy: Hopefully they can qualify.

Ireland beat UAE, if we can beat Holland then we've qualified. We want to win it though, hopefully Surrey can go straight back up this year, going to the Kent game at the Oval in July!! Andre Nel is their overseas player, Harbhijan Singh is going for the latter part of the season as well! :P

Yeah the defeat to the Afgans was something that should not have happened, thankfully the lads have steadied the ship again and are still on track to win the competition.

England have named Andy Flower as the coach/manager, or team director as they're saying now :thumb: When Gary Kirsten became India coach after playing for South Africa, I didn't think it was a good move (NZmanager told me otherwise) but I've been proved wrong, he's done well. I think Flower is the same, although he's been in the England set-up for quite a bit now, and knows the players, so I hope he does well.

He thinks we can win the Ashes, so good luck to him.

Saw that, good that he's firing again. Great signing by Hampshire imo, he'll be well up for the Lancs game anyway, I can tell you that!!

Andre Nel and Jade Dernbach got 2 wickets each as Gloucestershire continue Day 2 on 321-8
