Mourinho hungry for unique hat-trick

Posted Image vs Posted Image

New boss José Mourinho said Real Madrid CF were "as hungry for their tenth European Championshop as I am for my third" as he looked for a positive Group G start against AFC Ajax.

José Mourinho said Real Madrid CF were "as hungry for their tenth European Championshop as I am for my third" as he looks for a positive start to Group G against AFC Ajax. Martin Jol is not looking so far ahead, especially as he is without suspended duo Jan Vertonghen and Luis Suárez. His biggest job could be focusing the minds of younger players realising their "dream" of playing at the Santiago Bernabéu.

José Mourinho, Madrid coach

Madrid have history in this competition and so do I, so if we can come together we should feel optimistic about achieving something positive. Madrid are as hungry for their tenth European Championshop as I am for my third. The objective now is to grow as a team and to qualify from a group that's far from easy.

The Champions League is the one everybody wants to win but it's a competition that's more about details, and for that reason it's not the best team that wins the trophy. Ajax have a great history, just like Real Madrid. Both teams are giants in the history of football but now both need to find their way back to European success.

Martin Jol, Ajax coach

A team that have won the European Champion Clubs' Cup nine times against one that has won it on four occasions is obviously going to convert into one of the biggest games in Europe. I don't know if Mourinho is playing a little by saying that we have an advantage – they have the best players – but I understand why he said that.

The absence of Luis Suárez and Vertonghen is unusual for us but we are motivated and have no problem playing without them. Suárez scores about 50% of our goals but we're confident we can score one or two without him. Ajax are about to play against one of the biggest teams in the world; that's the level we are at at the moment. It's a great experience for everyone, myself included. For a lot of the younger ones it's an absolute dream to play this game.

Team news

• Madrid

Fernando Gago (sprained left knee ligaments), Ezequiel Garay (right knee) and Raúl Albiol (sprained right ankle) remain sidelined, while Kaká could miss the whole group stage after undergoing surgery on his left knee in early August.

• Ajax

Jol praised the Vitesse medical staff for "keeping Evander Sno alive" after the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday. Jan Vertonghen and Luis Suárez serve one-game bans on Matchday 1. Kenneth Vermeer (torn Achilles tendon), Nicolás Lodeiro (broken foot), Thimothée Atouba (left knee) and Rasmus Lindgren (right knee) are all out.

Weekend results

11/09/10 Madrid 1-0 CA Osasuna
(Carvalho 48)

Ricardo Carvalho scored his first league goal in almost two years, since registering in Chelsea FC's 3-1 win at Manchester City FC on 13 September 2008. Pepe returned following a calf injury, while Sami Khedira, Mesut Özil and Karim Benzema were preferred to Lassana Diarra, Sergio Canales and Ángel Di María.

11/09/10 Ajax 2-0 Willem II
(Suárez 33pen 54pen)

Suárez has now scored 80 goals in 100 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax. His side have won 18 of their last 19 league matches and are unbeaten in 23 Eredivisie games since a 2-0 defeat at FC Utrecht on 6 December.

Did you know?

Mourinho faced Jol in seven London derbies during their respective reigns at Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC from 2004 to 2007. Mourinho recorded five wins to Jol's one

'Natural winner' Van Gaal seeks opening victory

Posted Image vs Posted Image

Louis van Gaal believes FC Bayern München "will do fine" without injured Arjen Robben and suspended Franck Ribéry as last year's runners-up begin their campaign at home to AS Roma.

Last season's runners-up FC Bayern München may be starting their UEFA Champions League campaign against AS Roma on Wednesday without the injured Arjen Robben and suspended Franck Ribéry but coach Louis van Gaal – "a natural winner" – remains optimistic of victory.

Louis van Gaal, Bayern coach

It's not the strongest group, and not the weakest either, but we have a good chance of qualifying for the knockouts. Yes, we are without Robben and Ribéry, but Bayern have enough good players. We'll do fine, just like we did last year when this duo were injured. Ribéry will be replaced on the flank by Hamit Altıntop, [Danijel] Pranjić or [Thomas] Müller – I haven't made a decision on that yet.

Are Bayern favourites because we played in last season's final? No, I don't think so. In the UEFA Champions League there can be only one favorite – FC Barcelona. The second favourites are Chelsea. But we'll fight, and of course we want to go one step further than last season and we really need a good start to the group stage. I don't need any extra motivation for Champions League games. I'm a natural winner, and I want victory in absolutely every match – be it against FC Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen or AS Roma.

Claudio Ranieri, Roma coach

We're in a group of champions, so we know it will be tough. Bayern are the favourites, and the other three teams at the same level and fighting for second place. When Van Gaal [Barcelona] and I [Valencia] both worked in Spain we had mixed results against the other, but I have got the better of him away from home before.

Inter won the Champions League last year, and now all Italian clubs want to do well in Europe. I'm expecting a great fight tomorrow, and believe the 5-1 loss at Cagliari on Saturday will just add to our motivation and desire to delight our fans. We're not afraid of Bayern. For us, it is very important for us to reach the knockout phase.

Team news

• Bayern

Robben is out for the group stage with a torn left thigh muscle and Ribéry is serving out a three-match suspension.

• Roma

Rodrigo Taddei hurt his thigh in training on Monday and was ruled out along with three players struck down on international duty – Mirko Vučinić (back), Philippe Mexčs (calf) and John Arne Riise (concussion). Paolo Castellini replaced Riise at left-back on Saturday but lasted just 14 minutes before being forced off with a thigh problem which rules him out, although Adriano has recovered from a similar issue.

Weekend results

11/09/10 Bayern 0-0 SV Werder Bremen

An unchanged Bayern side failed to score for the second successive game, having found the net in their 24 previous league matches.

11/09/10 Cagliari Calcio 5-1 Roma
(Conti 8, Matri 23pen 47, Acquafresca 38, Lazzari 88; De Rossi 18)

Nicolás Burdisso was sent off after 22 minutes as Roma suffered their first 5-1 Serie A loss since 1949, ending a 13-game unbeaten away run in the league.

Did you know?
Van Gaal twice encountered
Italian opposition in the UEFA Champions League final with AFC Ajax, beating AC Milan 1-0 in 1995 but losing on penalties to Juventus the year after. He also guided Ajax to victory against Torino FC in the 1992 UEFA Cup final.

Arsenal's Wenger homes in on Braga's inexperience

Posted Image vs Posted Image

Arsčne Wenger said Arsenal FC want their experience to count as his injury-hit but seasoned team welcome newcomers SC Braga to London in Group H on Wednesday.

Arsenal FC manager Arsčne Wenger believes experience will be the key as his injury-hit but seasoned UEFA Champions League campaigners welcome newcomers SC Braga in Group H on Wednesday.

Arsčne Wenger, Arsenal manager

Confidence is high. We have to show we can focus every three or four days and keep our rhythm going. We know we can score goals, I believe we have showed that recently so let's keep doing that. We have a tricky game tomorrow because we are favourites. Braga are outsiders that are dangerous, especially on the counterattack and on long-range shots.

We want to exploit their inexperience. We are used to the competition. People expect us to go through because we have gone through the group stage for ten consecutive seasons. Of course we want to go through and deal with the fact that in many games in the Champions League we are favourites. Braga have a strong Brazilian influence. They are physically strong and well organised and they make the transition very quickly from defence to attack. What impresses me is that we played Porto last year and they finished ahead of Porto and in the qualifiers they knocked Sevilla out. That helps us to be on our toes.

Domingos Pacięncia, Braga coach

Because of their technical ability, Arsenal are not like other teams in England. They're a pleasure to watch, just like it is to watch Barcelona. There's a big gulf between the two teams. They're used to playing in this competition, whereas this is our first time in the group stage. The normal thing would be for Braga to lose but hopefully tomorrow we'll get praise for achieving something historic. That's what we're working for and why we're going to give our best. We have to believe we can score at any moment.

Team news

• Arsenal

Midfielder Abou Diaby is out with an ankle problem, defender Thomas Vermaelen is also missing due to an Achilles injury suffered on Belgium duty. Winger Theo Walcott is sidelined for six weeks following an ankle sprain while strikers Robin van Persie (ankle), Nicklas Bendtner (groin) and midfielders Aaron Ramsey (leg) and Emmanuel Frimpong (knee) are also out. Samir Nasri is available after knee surgery.

• Braga

Goalkeeper Quim is out until the new year after rupturing his Achilles in pre-season training.

Weekend results

11/09/10 Arsenal 4-1 Bolton Wanderers FC
(Koscielny 24, Chamakh 58, Song 78, Vela 83; Elmander 44

Arsenal remain within two points of leaders Chelsea FC after a win in which Laurent Koscielny opened his Gunners account. Sébastien Squillaci made his debut in place of the injured Vermaelen, while there was a first appearance of the season for Kieran Gibbs.

11/09/10 FC Porto 3-2 Braga
(Varela 33 70, Hulk 63; Aguiar 16, Lima 61)

Braga suffered their first Liga defeat since a 1-0 loss to last season's eventual champions SL Benfica on 27 March. Scorer of a hat-trick against Sevilla FC in the UEFA Champions League play-offs, Lima's goal was his first in the Liga for Braga.

Did you know?

When, in 1921, Braga changed their team shirts from two large green and white vertical stripes, they took Arsenal's red-and-white colours as their inspiration. Since then they have been known as Minho's Arsenalistas (Arsenal from Minho).

Karpin out to end Marseille hoodoo

Posted Image vs Posted Image

FC Spartak Moskva coach Valeri Karpin is hoping to make it third time lucky at the Stade Vélodrome as his side open Group F against French titleholders Olympique de Marseille.

FC Spartak Moskva coach Valeri Karpin is hoping to make it third time lucky at the Stade Vélodrome as his side open Group F against Olympique de Marseille. Karpin's two previous appearances at the ground, for Spartak in 1991 and RC Celta de Vigo eight years later, both ended in 2-1 defeats and he knows his players will have to be at their best to avoid an unwanted hat-trick. OM counterpart Didier Deschamps is also wary, but is already mapping a route to the last 16.

Didier Deschamps, Marseille coach

Spartak have a lot of attacking strength, with Welliton in the middle and some quality wingers. They like to have the ball and know how to use it; they have more problems when they don't have possession. We want to go a long way in this competition, but for now we are focused on winning the first match.

Spartak are probably our main rivals for second place in the group. This is the most prestigious of all club competitions. We learned last year that small mistakes can cost us dearly. In theory, we have the ability to get to the last 16 at least, but there is only one truth and that is on the pitch.

Valeri Karpin, Spartak coach

I lost my first two games at Marseille so I hope it's a case of third time lucky. We have studied footage of Marseille: they are a quality side. They've not had a great start to the season but the UEFA Champions League is a different competition and they will be eager to give a good account of themselves.

As Didier Deschamps said, OM and Spartak may end up fighting for second place but as far as we're concerned we'll start by fighting for top spot. I don't know what team I will play and don't have a particular plan. We will see tomorrow.

Team news

• Marseille

Leyti N'Diaye missed the weekend's 2-2 Ligue 1 draw against AS Monaco FC after injuring his shoulder in training with Senegal but Souleymane Diawara (thigh) is back in training. Concerns over new signing Loďc Rémy's heart have been eased, but he sustained a groin injury during France's loss to Belarus on 3 September.

• Spartak

Nikola Drinčić has returned to training but is yet to make his debut having joined Spartak during the winter break after fracturing his tibia in January. Kirill Kombarov has been training separately following an ankle injury while Nikita Bazhenov did not travel to France having suffered a thigh injury in training on Sunday.

Weekend results

12/09/10 Marseille 2-2 AS Monaco FC
(Valbuena 42, Adriano og 80; Niculae 15, Park 79)

Making his first competitive start for OM, André-Pierre Gignac had an effort ruled out in added time as the French champions were left with five points from as many league games in 2010/11 – they had 11 at this stage last season. Gabriel Heinze was rested following his return from international duty in Argentina.

11/09/10 Spartak 2-1 FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast
(Welliton 7 74; Kirichenko 21)

Spartak have won three of their last four league games, while Welliton's double took his tally for the season to 15 in 16 matches. Andriy Dykan and Aiden McGeady made their debuts against Saturn, the latter setting up Welliton's first goal.

Did you know?

Deschamps played in OM's 6-0 defeat of Spartak's city rivals PFC CSKA Moskva in the 1992/93 group stage, their best UEFA Champions League win. The Ligue 1 side went on to lift the trophy that year, beating AC Milan 1-0 in the final

Weakened Chelsea tough enough for Žilina

Posted Image vs Posted Image

Chelsea FC may be without Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba but Pavel Hapel, coach of UEFA Champions League debutants MŠK Žilina, knows their absence will barely weaken a Chelsea FC side in rampant form.

Slovakia's MŠK Žilina have the unenviable task of taking on Chelsea FC in their UEFA Champions League debut in Group F and home coach Pavel Hapel is not taking comfort even from the absence of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

Pavel Hapal, Žilina coach

Our main target is to show everyone that we deserved to qualify. We know that two excellent Chelsea players are not available, Frank Lampard due to injury and Didier Drogba through suspension. However, I don't see it as a big advantage because Chelsea have a big enough squad to replace these stars with players of similar quality. I hope the stadium will be sold out and our great fans will help us in the fight with Chelsea. Žilina don't play sides of this quality every day.

Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea coach

I've already made a decision about the starting lineup: Čech, Ivanović, Alex, Terry, Zhirkov, John Obi Mikel, Essien, Benayoun, Malouda, Anelka, Sturridge. Žilina are a good team. I saw their play-off against Sparta. They deserved to go through. We have to be careful because they are a very organised side, especially in defence, and can cause us problems. We cannot afford to feel superior. In football everything is possible but, yes, we expect victory.

Team news

• Žilina

Hapal said: "We have everybody fit and ready for tomorrow's game."

• Chelsea

Drogba is beginning a two-match ban resulting from his red card against FC Internazionale Milano last season. Lampard had a hernia operation at the end of August and will not play, with Ashley Cole and José Bosingwa also not travelling to Slovakia.

Weekend results

11/09/10 Žilina 2-1 1. FC Tatran Prešov
(Jež 14, Vladavič 44pen; Piter-Bučko 46)

Slovakian league leaders Žilina are the only unbeaten side after eight rounds; indeed their last defeat in the competition was 17 games ago, on 24 March at ŠK Slovan Bratislava. Admir Vladavić's penalty came in his first appearance since returning from a 12-month spell at FC Salzburg.

11/09/10 West Ham United FC 1-3 Chelsea
(Parker 85; Essien 2 83, Kalou 17)

Chelsea may have conceded their first goal of the season but a fourth straight win kept them two points clear of Arsenal FC at the Premier League summit. Since the last time they conceded, against Tottenham Hotspur FC on 17 April, Chelsea had scored a league record 35 unanswered goals in 669 minutes.

Did you know?

The sides have met before, in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. It finished 5-0 on aggregate to the London side, who won 2-0 in Zilina and 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. John Terry and Lampard played in both games.

Shakhtar's Lucescu wary of improved Partizan

Posted Image vs Posted Image

Mircea Lucescu believes FK Partizan have undergone a transformation since losing 4-1 at FK Shakhtar Dontesk a year ago as the champions of Ukraine and Serbia prepare to meet again in Group H.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu warned that their first opponents in UEFA Champions League Group H, FK Partizan, are "much better" than when his side beat the Serbian team 4-1 at home a year ago in the UEFA Europa League. Indeed, a run of 37 league outings unbeaten has given Aleksandar Stanojević's men an air of invincibility.

Mircea Lucescu, Shakhtar coach

The Champions League is very important for the image of our club. I think we have a team which is strong enough to get through the group stage. But I'm sure our opponents have the same idea: that's why it will be very difficult to achieve our goal. We need to play twice as well as we do in the Ukrainian Premier League.

Partizan are much better than the team that played us in the Europa League last season. Under their new coach, Aleksandar Stanojević, they have beaten everyone. Their long unbeaten run gives them confidence. Partizan have improved their tactics and are much better organised now, but we need to find and exploit their weaknesses.

Aleksandar Stanojević, Partizan coach

I'm a young coach, a beginner, and our team is a combination of youth and experience. We will try to get all we can out of this wonderful opportunity to compete in the Champions League. The young players want to prove their ability – they know people in every country in Europe are watching them. The older players want to end their careers with dignity.

Shakhtar have not changed since our last meeting. They bought a very good Brazilian midfielder Douglas Costa last winter and are still very strong. Only two or three of the players who will play tomorrow came up against Shakhtar a year ago. Is that an advantage? Let's see.

Team news

• Shakhtar

Fernandinho is out of the group stage after breaking his leg at FC Obolon Kyiv on Friday; defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy is also missing with a pulled hamstring.

• Partizan

Mladen Krstajić underwent an operation on his broken nose on Sunday.

Weekend results

10/09/10 FC Obolon Kyiv 1-0 Shakhtar
(Khudzik 51)

Shakhtar's 25-game unbeaten run in the Ukrainian Premier League came to an end in a match overshadowed by Fernandinho's broken leg. Henrik Mkhitaryan made his debut but Shakhtar failed to score for the first time in 15 league matches.

11/09/10 Partizan 3-0 FK Rad
(Boya 48 77, Petrović 69)

Pierre Boya made a brilliant return on his first appearance for Partizan since leaving three years ago. Stefan Savić made his debut as the titleholders maintained their unbeaten start to the Super League; their last loss in that competition was on 10 May 2009, 37 games ago.

Did you know?

This is a quick reunion for these teams who faced each other last season in the UEFA Europa League group stage. Shakhtar won 4-1 in Ukraine, while in the return Partizan obtained a measure of revenge with a 1-0 win secured by Lamine Diarra's early strike.

Step into unknown for Milan and Auxerre

Posted Image vs Posted Image

Massimiliano Allegri and Jean Fernandez will make UEFA Champions League coaching debuts when AC Milan face AJ Auxerre though the Frenchman is no stranger to football in these parts.

Having seen his side lose 2-0 at AC Cesena on Saturday, AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri expects another tough game on his UEFA Champions League management debut when AJ Auxerre come to town in Group G on Wednesday. French counterpart Jean Fernandez is also making his bow in European football's elite club competition but he is no stranger to Milan – he owes his entire approach to football, he says, to Arrigo Sacchi.

Massimiliano Allegri, Milan coach

Our morale is high; we have talked a lot and analysed the game at Cesena. It was a strange game, we didn't play well. Of course, as many have said, you always expect something more from a team like Milan. My players tried their best, we had a couple of chances in the first half, made two or three mistakes, and I'm sure those are mistakes we aren't going to make again.

I haven't had the chance to watch an Auxerre game live, but I viewed their two play-off matches in the summer and their league game against Monaco. Against Monaco, although they lost, they had many chances. So we have to be careful, because Auxerre have quick players, both up front and on the flanks. It's not going to be an easy game for sure, we must not make mistakes – especially our defenders.

Jean Fernandez, Auxerre coach

There's a possibility the players will feel the pressure of playing at a stadium like San Siro, against a side that play with such a high tempo. Milan have quality players but we are here on merit; we are here to win. If Milan are at their best it will be tough, but they have only played two games this season so maybe they are not ready yet. We have to keep focused for 90 minutes and more: players of this calibre will make the most of any mistakes.

One of Milan's former coaches, Arrigo Sacchi, changed my way of thinking about football. I came here for a week to study at Milanello, their training centre, and I saw Sacchi's revolution: he changed everything in football. I arrived here with one football philosophy, I left with another.

Team news

• Milan

Alessandro Nesta (sciatic nerve) and Clarence Seedorf (knee) missed the Cesena game but are available again, though Thiago Silva is a doubt with a right thigh problem that forced him off at half-time on Saturday.

• Auxerre

Roy Contout serves a one-match ban.

Weekend results

11/09/10 AC Cesena 2-0 Milan
(Bogdani 31, Giaccherini 44)

Milan suffered a fourth straight away defeat as Zlatan Ibrahimović, like Robinho making his debut, hit the post from the penalty spot.

11/09/10 Auxerre 1-1 SM Caen
(Pedretti 19; El Arabi 90+3)

Auxerre have picked up only four points from five games, just like last season when they ended up third. Frédéric Sammaritano made his Ligue 1 debut.

Did you know?

Fernandez was assistant to Raymond Goethals when he led Olympique de Marseille to victory against Milan in the 1993 UEFA Champions League final. He was also part of OM's coaching team when they defeated Milan in the quarter-finals in 1991.

Basel first up for new coach Cârţu

Posted Image vs Posted Image

Newly appointed Sorin Cârţu is ready to lead CFR 1907 Cluj in the UEFA Champions League as the Romanian titleholders take on an FC Basel 1893 side setting high targets in Group E.

Just two days after replacing Andrea Mandorlini in the CFR 1907 Cluj hot seat, the experienced Sorin Cârţu is poised for "an important milestone" as the Romanian titleholders kick off their campaign at home to an FC Basel 1893 side setting their sights high in Group E.

Sorin Cârţu, CFR Cluj

We're trying to approach this as a normal game. I trust my players and I think playing in the Champions League is motivation in itself for the players. Our Champions League experience [eight of the squad remain from the 2008/09 campaign] is an advantage but Basel have several quality players – Huggel, Streller and Frei – all with lots of experience. We must pay particular attention in the final third; our defenders must be alert.

On a personal level, the Champions League is an important milestone in my career but I have had others. On the domestic front I've won everything so the pressure is to repeat what I've done, not necessarily better it, and return to the group stage next season.

Thorsten Fink, Basel coach

This will be a difficult game for us as we don't quite know what to expect with the change of coach. There are no small teams in the Champions League; Cluj are a good side and anything is possible in football. We're aiming to finish second in the group even though we're third seeds, although third place wouldn't be a tragedy for us – Bayern are naturally the favourites to win the group. I don't really want to name names as we would rather concentrate on our own game, but Cluj do have good players such as the No16 [Rafael Bastos].

Team news

• CFR

Croatian striker Saša Bjelanović picked up an ankle injury in a 2-2 draw with FC Astra Ploiesti on 13 August.

• Basel

Cabral made his first appearance in over a month against BSC Young Boys on Sunday, though Jacques Zoua (thigh) and Genséric Kusunga (knee) were all ruled out. Fink said in the pre-match conference that Valentin Stocker (ankle) would undergo a fitness test on the day of the game.

Weekend results

10/09/10 FC Rapid Bucureşti 2-0 CFR
(Cássio 58 90+1)

CFR had two players sent off for the second successive away game – Emmanuel Koné (42) and Rafael Bastos (64) – with defeat spelling the end for coach Mandorlini. He was replaced on Monday by Cârţu, who has signed a two-year contract.

12/09/10 BSC Young Boys 2-2 Basel
(Jemal 3, Degen 23; Frei 39, Chipperfield 73)

Substitute Scott Chipperfield scored within two minutes of coming on as Basel earned a point in Berne. They had been two down when the game was held up for eight minutes after Young Boys defender Emiliano Dudar suffered a severe head injury – he was put into an induced coma.

Did you know?

Basel recorded a 1-1 draw at eventual winners FC Barcelona in their last UEFA Champions League group stage campaign in 2008/09, but lost their other five games.

Looking forward to Chelsea's match tonight. Zilina will be up for it in their first Champions League match, and it's at home in front of their own fans. It will be a close match I think, although if we score first then it might open up a bit and we can score a few more. Marseille v Spartak Moscow will be interesting - I think Marseille will win at home though.

Some good matches tonight

Matchday 1: Part 2

AC Milan 2 Auxerre 0
Arsenal 6 Braga 0
Bayern Munich 2 Roma 0
Cluj 2 Basel 1
Marseille 0 Spartak Moscow 1
MSK Zilina 1 Chelsea 4
Real Madrid 2 Ajax 0
Shakhtar Donetsk 1 Partizan Belgrade 0

It was easy for Chelsea in the end. Perhaps I overestimated Zilina but I thought they'd do well in their first ever group stage match. Once we scored our first, we were always going to win by a few more. A shame we couldn't get more in the second half but it's three points and a good result away from home.

Impressive from Arsenal. They should win their home matches by a healthy margin but I think the away matches will be more challenging.

I'm surprised Basel lost. It was already looking tough for them in a group containing Bayern Munich and Roma, but they can't even beat Cluj :neulol: Marseille lost at home to Spartak Moscow - surprising. They'll want three points when they come to Stamford Bridge then - should be a good game :neuwine:
