Cameron White has to play for the Royal Challengers, not Victoria.

He doesn't have to though, right? I think the Challengers have to pay Victoria for his services (and other players who play for their 'second' teams).

Preview: Posted ImageMumbai Indians v Highveld Lions Posted Image (CLT20 2010 - Game 1)

What

The first game of CLT20 2010 sees the local Highveld Lions take on IPL runners-up Mumbai Indians.

When

Friday, September 10, 2010. The game begins at 5.30 pm, SAST.

Where

Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

About the teams

Mumbai Indians come to CLT20 2010 as one of the pre tournament favourites. With the ageless Sachin Tendulkar in their ranks and a host of big names in their squad – Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, JP Duminy, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga –MI have the necessary firepower to tame the Lions in their den.
The Lions on the other hand enter the match with the home advantage. The fact that the MI batsmen are not familiar with their bowling attack gives the Lions the opportunity to take Mumbai by surprise. And having proved their skill in the 2009/10 Pro20 series, Robert Frylinck and Ethan O’Reilly might just prove to be a handful for the Mumbai batsmen.

Key players

Posted Image

Lasith Malinga, with his slinger-like action, is ideally suited to exploit the pace and bounce of South African conditions. Malinga did exceedingly well in the recently concluded home Test series for Sri Lanka against India and would be looking to carry his good form into MI’s opening match at CLT20 2010.

Posted Image

With a relatively inexperienced batting line-up that is also bereft of big names, Neil McKenzie would be expected to shoulder the bulk of the batting responsibility for the Lions. And with a record Test-opening partnership of 415 with Graeme Smith against his name, Lions fans are hoping that Smith can pull off some of the same magic against MI in the opening game.

What Next

Both teams would like to begin the tournament on the right note and so a loss would be a bit of a disappointment for either team. However, there is always a chance of turning things around in the future group games. Having said that, expect MI to come out all guns blazing and anything less than a roaring performance by the Highveld Lions would leave the home fans disappointed.

Nice preview

Neil McKenzie is a legend, he did great for Hampshire this season.

Have you found out whether you're going to any matches or not then?

According to the website, there's only one match on Tuesday (Mumbai Indians v South Australia), unless you mean the Tuesday after when South Australia play Guyana and Highveld play the Royal Challengers  Sounds cool whatever match you're going to.

Highveld beat the Mumbai Indians earlier :neuwine: Apparently some strange bowling decisions by the Indians...

Is this on TV anywhere? I love watching T20. I'm sure it was last year. MI have some big names there, theyre looking favorites at the moment. Why are there no English teams there, last year the mighty Sussex were in it :) I would of thought Hampshire should be... is it because it clashes with the LVCC?

Cool to know you like cricket too - a Sussex fan, congrats on winning the second division ;)

I can't find it on TV either. The Indian Premier League was on ITV4 and YouTube but this is the Champions League. We're not in it because it clashes with the end of our domestic season, indeed. A shame because Hampshire could have been there :x

Is a shame no English teams are there, you probably wouldn't have got McKenzie to play for you though :| You only just secured your place in dv1 today so congrats on that :). It definitely was on TV last year as i remember Sussex getting thrashed but ive just checked and its nowhere :(

Somerset played in it a few seasons ago. I remember Tresco getting flown back over, not being able to handle it. (Never going to live down losing to Hampshire, are we Chris? Despite not losing)

Match Report: Mumbai Indians v Highveld Lions (Match 1)September 10, Johannesburg:

Posted Image

CLT20 2010 got under way with Mumbai Indians taking on local favourites Highveld Lions at the Wanderers Stadium. Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to bowl first, a decision proposed by Shaun Pollock in his pitch discussion with Ravi Shastri.

What was surprising to see was Mumbai opting to open the bowling with medium pacer Ryan McLaren and the left-arm orthodox spin of Ali Murtuza instead of the usual suspects Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga. As a result, the Lions lost a couple of wickets early on but went on to make steady progress to bring up their first 50 runs in 7.2 overs. Opener Jonathan Vandiar batted at a brisk pace and put on a partnership of 43 for the third wicket with Vaughn van Jaarsveld. When van Jaarsveld fell with the score at 81, Vandiar, in the company of Neil McKenzie, changed gears. He was severe on the Mumbai bowlers and hit them to all corners of the Wanderers, a big six off Malinga over mid-wicket standing out in his 48-ball knock of 71.

Neil McKenzie, the most experienced of the Lions batsmen, took centre stage at the fall of Vandiar’s wicket and ensured that the Lions innings did not lose momentum at the end. A 30-ball cameo of 56 proved just why he is such a dangerous player. Thanks to his late flourish the Lions ended their innings with a most impressive score of 186 for the loss of five wickets. Zaheer Khan, coming back from injury, had a forgettable day having given away 45 runs while Lasith Malinga was the pick of the MI bolwers with figures of 3 for 33.

MI began their innings with the right intent. Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan mixed caution with aggression and added up a 50-run partnership in 6.5 overs. Dhawan, the young southpaw batted well for his 32 off 30 deliveries before falling for an ill advised reverse sweep off Aaron Phangiso. Ambati Rayudu was run-out shortly after but Tendulkar, accompanied by JP Duminy, upped the tempo. The pair were particularly severe on the left-arm spin of Phangiso, the bowler going for 26 runs in two overs.

Tendulkar, who was dropped by Alviro Petersen in the eighth over, scored 69 and his stay at the crease was a study in the art of T20 batting. He fell to Shane Burger against the run of play and his dismissal triggered a collapse with Duminy, Kieron Pollard, Rajagopal Sathish and Harbhajan Singh unable to guide Mumbai home. In the end the Lions bowlers held their nerve and bettered the formidable Mumbai side to delight South African fans and set the tournament off to an interesting start.

Brief ScoresHighveld Lions 186 for 5 (Jonathan Vandiar 71, Neil McKenzie 56*, Lasith Malinga 3-33) beat Mumbai Indians 177 for 6 (Sachin Tendulkar 69, Shikhar Dhawan 32, Shane Burger 2-33) by 9 runs
