Commonwealth Games 2010 Introduction The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event which is held every four years and features athletes from members of the Commonwealth of Nations (former countries of the British Empire, apart from two). As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball. There are currently 54 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams participate in the Games. The four Home Nations of the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – send separate teams to the Commonwealth Games, and individual teams are also sent from the British Crown dependencies of Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man (unlike at the Olympic Games, where the combined "Great Britain" team represents all four home nations and the Crown dependencies). Many of the British overseas territories also send their own teams. The Australian external territory of Norfolk Island also sends its own team, as do the Cook Islands and Niue, two states in free association with New Zealand. The last Commonwealth Games were in Melbourne, Australia, in 2006. This year it's in New Delhi (India). Sports This year's Games, between the 3rd and the 14th October, will feature the following sports: Aquatics Archery Athletics Badminton Boxing Cycling Gymnastics Hockey Lawn Bowls Netball Rugby Sevens Shooting Squash Table Tennis Tennis Weightlifting Wrestling Official website with details on each sport Venues ![]() Click here. |

Organisation has been a disaster apparently. Shitty public transport, facilities, accommodation and all that. The Commonwealth Games is a waste of time, representing antiquated English colonialism but with decreasing support and becoming very costly at that. I can't see how much longer they will last. So yeah those are my thoughts. But as long as we beat England it's all good.

To be honest I can't see the point of the Commonwealth Games either now, but it's still fun to watch and follow. It's not like these countries are still part of the British Empire so what's the point The Opening Ceremony is about to start - hopefully the Indians are ready

The Games are open! I saw the first half of the opening ceremony before heading out for Chelsea-Arsenal. It looked good from what I saw, and hopefully the media can stop being negative and focus on the good points of India's hosting of the games. You might find this article interesting, Hugh. |

Kind of stupid there really is no competition, but I haven't been following it specifically. I've heard some pretty bad stories like athletes getting sick from the pool, the athletics track being ripped up, scoreboard collapsing at the rugby.

I haven't really been following the bad stories about the Games - I'm fed up with the negative press about it really. Looking forward to the rugby soon A shame cricket isn't in the Commonwealth Games though...

I think it's over right? Australia got 74 gold medals, 177 in total. Even India beat England.

Indeed it's over. Here's the final medal table. I thought the Commonwealth Games would get more of an interest here actually - Dyer with bowls, Nuno with South Africa... |
