Rugby World Cup 2011 Welcome to the thread for the Rugby World Cup 2011, taking place in New Zealand. The World Cup begins on 9th September with the opening match between New Zealand and Tonga, with the Final to be on the 23rd October. The groups - or the pools as they're known - are: Pool A: New Zealand, France, Tonga, Japan, Canada Pool B: England, Scotland, Argentina, Romania, Georgia Pool C: Australia, Ireland, Italy, Russia, USA Pool D: South Africa, Wales, Samoa, Fiji, Namibia The top two teams from each group go into the quarter-finals as so: QF 1: Winner Pool C v Runner Up Pool D QF 2: Winner Pool B v Runner Up Pool A QF 3: Winner Pool D v Runner Up Pool C QF 4: Winner Pool A v Runner Up Pool B The semi-finals are between quarter-final match 1 winner v quarter-final match 2 winner, and the same for winners 3 and 4. The two winners obviously go to the Final, while the losers go into the third place play-off. The fixtures can be seen here. The host cities and stadiums can be seen here. |

World Cup warm up matches are taking place around the world. Australia, South Africa and New Zealand are using the Tri-Nations as a warm-up, while the northern hemisphere teams are playing each other. England just beat Wales 23-19 in their first warm-up before facing Wales again next week. Let's get in the mood for the World Cup with only 33 days remaining. What are your best memories of the World Cup? Of course for me it would have to be England's win in 2003. One of the best moments in sport for me. It went to extra-time and then my favourite player, Jonny Wilkinson, hit a drop goal to help us win 20-17. Magical moment. I remember 2007 as well - the World Cup when even Alle seemed interested! England weren't even a good side but we somehow managed to get to the final again! Unfortunately South Africa won, but a great effort from us anyway.I'm positive about our chances this year. We've done well of late

I watched a few of the matches including the final I think last world cup. However, since it is in New Zealand, most of the matches will be played when I am asleep.

Good group for France - despite having NZ Tonga could cause us problems too - didn't they beat Australia a week or 2 ago? As for the memories - 1995 comes to mind (Invictus ). I followed the 2007 one here and there, I think we got knocked out in the semis or something

Samoa beat Australia 2 weeks ago, I think Tonga aren't meant to be as good. I can see England-France in the QFs and and NZ-Argentina (or Scotland?? Whereas Australia and South Africa seem to have a place booked in the semis already (yeah, I said it). I can see NZ winning it though, they'll break their duck. They dismantled Australia extremely easily on the weekend and at home, they'll be too hard to beat.

I think New Zealand will win for sure, but hopefully the pressure of playing at home will get to them England should face either New Zealand or France in the quarter-finals - great! Hugh's right, Alle, it was Samoa who beat Australia. Tonga aren't that good. You seemed to follow the 2007 tournament quite a bit - I remember your reactions on MSN to me when England lost in the final

Kind of weird they changed the captain so late on. I personally liked Elsom. I dunno, hopefully not too much unrest in the camp. Already a couple of the young players have been reprimanded for going out drinking! |

Great start for Australia then! Just found the UK times for the matches here. Lots of early mornings then, but the times for the England matches aren't so bad. 7am, 8.30am and 9.30am is ok. |

Jake and I have the demo on PS3! The game seems ok Jake - well, union has 15 players, while league has 13. I think the scoring system is a bit different too. In rugby league, when a player is tackled and play stops, the player has to roll the ball behind him to another player on his team. There are little differences but I think league sucks
