It seemed obvious all the time, that Kev was going to win this. Some people even tried to convince me that this contest was too obvious. I mean, he saved his club!

However, it's been proved wrong. He wasn't outstanding. I managed to match him, he wasn't unbeaten anyway. I managed to convince people that many of us would do the same if our clubs was as small as Cork City.

The competition was suddenly open.

Born to save Cork City
Posted Image

Have you ever joined in saving your club from being written off the existence? Or written matchday magazines for your club? Have you been on trial with your favourite team? Kevin Galvin has.

Cork City might not be the biggest football club in the world. In spite of being the second largest city in the republic of Ireland, the 18 year old's favourite side has been pity the last seasons. Due to financial trouble, caused by a bad chairman, Cork City lost their license to play in the League of Ireland in 2009. However, Galvin and the rest of the Rebel Army didn't give up.

Saved by the fans

"Just because one fella needed an ego boost and somewhere to put his bad debts he affected an entire community. I think we did feel an extra responsibility but by rallying together we built friendships and a huge strength within the fanbase. It's difficult to support the club, there's an awful decision between not giving the players money or helping the man that's killing your club" Galvin explains.

The fans ensured City was still represented in the League of Ireland by entering under the temporary name Cork City FORAS Co-op in the immediate aftermath of the winding up of the previous holding company Cork City Investments Fc Ltd. The club subsequently purchased the rights to the name "Cork City Football Club" from the liquidators and now compete under this name. Cork City FC never ceased to exist as the former holding company Cork City Investments Fc Ltd was still in existence during its liquidation period when the name and intellectual property were purchased, and the underage teams continued to exist under the name while owned and funded by the fans.

TV promoted

Our own Kevin Galvin and the rest of the fans spent a lot of energy trying to save the club. Shefellover93 was even on TV!

"Yeah, I helped the club with media work through interviews on national television. It was about tom coughlan, when we didn't know if we were going bust or not" Kev says.

So basically everyone in Ireland saw you and heard your words?

"Well everyone who tuned in, which is about half the country, so yeah, it was cool to be featured. Albeit it was at a bad time for the club!"

How is it like to support a club in crisis while disagreeing with the ones that runs the club?

"It was very tough, but I think the main feeling was frustration. The problem with one person owning the club is that nobody else gets an input in the decisions. It was horrible seeing guys take huge paycuts, fellas with mortgages and families to feed. Thankfully now though we're being owned by people who know, love, and care about the club. We're self sufficent for the most part and results on the pitch are now starting to reflect the hard work off it, with a League Cup final coming up next month", Kev continues.

Club worker

That's not the only thing the great Cork fan has done for the club. The teenage does regulary jobs for his precious side.

"I regularly write in the matchday magazine, play a role in creating atmosphere by waving tifo's, starting chants and playing the drum, I've probably done 101 things but those are the ones that spring to mind!" Kev tells.

You write matchday magazines?

"Yeah, I usually throw something in and it manages to get printed most of the time! I write a piece at the moment on former City players, a little history about them, and then what they're doing now" Galvin explains.

Big fan since two months of age

You can easly tell that this is a proper supporter of a club. No wonder why Kev loves Cork so much. His sole was rasied at Turner's Cross in an early age, which makes it hard for him to count games.

"Well my first game was at 2 months old! But I started really taking an interest around the age of 7 or 8, so I suppose I've seen them around 10 seasons. Nearing about 500 games I should say, rough guesstimate.
Maybe more"

Two months!? You must really come from a real Cork City family!

"My grandfather supported an old Cork team Cork Hibernians, and after they went bust my Dad started following the newly formed Cork City with his brother and my Dad co-edited the matchday magazine for about 6 or 7 years so it was always a major part of his life, and still is despite him hanging up his pen!" Kev says.

Trained with the team

There is probably no other member at the Complex who actually knows the players as much as Kevin does. He has in fact been on a trial with the proper side, as he is a goalkeeper in a local team.

"I was lucky enough to be on trial with them for quite a time. Playing wise, training with the first team was an amazing experience, saving shots from my favourite players is a great confidence booster for a young player!" Kev proudly explains.

So they can actually put your name to their lips?

"I meet them every week when they play! All the goalkeepers do, and I'm friends with a few of the others with my playing days. The manager knows me very well and often chats to me when I see him, as well as the goalkeeping coach"

-One of my best feelings

I know this question is hard, but... What is your best memory with your club?

"In terms of supporting, there have been quite a few. But personally the League win in 2005 is the standout one. On the last night of the Shed (The stand that use to house our singing section) and with a packed crowd everything we did that night turned to gold on national tv, the atmosphere was electric, and the feeling when the final whistle blew is one of the best ever Ive had in any sport"

Cork - Derry City 2-0, 2005

Quality not being the best here, but absolutely enough to enjoy the action!

Got the keeper's jersey

"The date was the 17th November, because I won a school championship the day before! We beat Derry City 2-0, John O'Flynn and Liam Kearney with the goals. They were top by two points going into the game so we needed to beat them to win"

Do you remember what you felt during the game and afterwards?

"I went mental of course! I did what any fan did, hugged my dad and my brother (his only match in the last 8 years!) and felt a lump in my throat after the second, it just felt right. I think the best moment for me though, being biased, was the goalkeeper Michael Devine making a fantastic save five minutes before the end to deny now Celtic midfielder Paddy McCourt, and getting his shirt afterwards!"

That's on your wall surely!

"I wear it to every game!" Kev says.

You can see Kev in the video, wearing his blue jersey!

Barcelona

What is your biggest dream with Cork?

"I dream of us winning national titles and becoming the country's leading force in Europe, making the group stages of the Champions League and playing against the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona In terms of me, I think it's too late for me to play for Cork City, the club is getting stronger and so are the players, but that doesn't bother me really. I never expected it anyways!" Kev admits.

Cork in the Champions League! Imagine!

"Irish teams have been knocking on the door for years now. It's only a matter of time"

- Makes me proud

How is it like to support Cork City?

"That's a tough question to ask!
It's strange, it's worth far more than the football, the lure of supporting City is one that must be experienced. The feeling of chanting along your heroes and friends, alongside the people you've spent most of your life with! Winning a huge game against a rival after a long trip and having a pint with the goalscorer. Playing with your team, and helping support it's future. The team that support your local area, it makes you feel very proud"
Kev explains.

Finally, what makes you the best supporter at TC2?

"I helped save my club from extinction!"
