So the communists and the ultra-nationalists Golden Dawn have won seats in parliament. Thoughts, Babis? Who did you vote for?

Didn't the guys who were against austerity win big? Might be a dumb question, but how exactly does greece get itself out of this mess without spending cuts? |

Communists got seats in the Greek Parliament since 1974 or so. They get ~8-9% +- 2% every time since then. So we're pretty used to KKE ( the Communist party ) being in the parliament and we're used to what they support ( exit from Eurozone & NATO, less taxes for the poor, more taxes for the rich, return to drachma, make private banks, factories, etc. public ) Ultra-nationalists Golden Dawn is a new phenomenon here in Greece. What most right parties claim is that illegal immigrants are considered to be a big problem here in Greece because they are much more than the country can handle. That results in less job opportunities for the Greeks because immigrants agree to work for less and without insurance, some parts of Athens, Thessaloniki etc. turning into ghettos and a rise in thefts/murders etc. So when most Greeks lose at least 40% of their annual pay because of the new austerity measures, some of them who can't take care of their families properly are bound to start believing we would be better off only with legal immigrants here ( who amount to about ~200-400k instead of the 1.5-2 million immigrants ( legal + illegal ) we got here in Greece right now ). So some people ( and believe me, I disagree with them ) turn to "solutions" such as some far right-wing parties. However their is an abundance of evidence that prove this Golden Dawn party has many members connected to Neonazism . The reason they got so popular was that they did patrol the homes of the Greeks living in the so-called immigrant "ghettos" help the poor and the needy Greeks with food etc. and also help the old men move around, do their shopping etc. In many occasions they have beat up immigrants in the past.At least Greece escaped the duo-party-ism. What I mean by that, is that for the last 40 years the New Democracy party and PASOK party were getting at least 70% of the votes every time we had elections. They had corrupted members and still do. They passed a law that makes it impossible to jail or even accuse Ministers for stealing or violating the laws with which they covered all the stealing they did. In this elections however, both parties accounted for only 32% of the votes, so they got owned pretty badly. Most of their old filthy stealing members are off the parliament, which now got new, younger people with fresh ideas. I'm not saying that those 2 parties are 100% corrupted, but at least 50% of their members have stole, overspent, got their family and friends jobs and much much more. All in all, the political situation here in Greece is much more different and complex than in your countries, I guess. PS: Yes hugh, we should cut on spending, but we should start this cutting from those who stole from the Greek National Finances throughout these years. Then we should move on and cut the spendings of the high earners. Instead, these people kept the high earners paychecks intact and punished those who could hardly get by in the first place. Ah, I didn't know the communists are regulars in the Greek parliament. Golden Dawn winning seats is interesting though. I get the feeling we'll see the rise in far-right parties around Europe from now on. Marine Le Pen's party did well in the French presidential elections earlier too... |

And then the president's gonna try to form a coalition. He'll 99.99% fail as well unless DHMAR ( Democratic Left ) pull off an upset and accept to form a goverment with the help of ND and PASOK, which seems unlikely. New Gallup Polls assume that Syriza will reach ~25-28% in the next elections, ND will be around 20%, PASOK will drop to ~11-12%, Independent Greeks and KKE(Communist Party) will stay close to their previous election results, DHMAR ( Democratic Left ) and Golden Dawn will drop a lil bit ( around 0.5-1.5% each ) but will manage to squeeze into the next Parliament with some MPs. |
